your favorite boxing myth?
First topic message reminder :
thread title says it all really what is your favourite myth which has built up around a fighter or an event over the years?
my personal favourites:
Tyson was never the same after Cus died(despite the fact he he died early in his career and before he won the title against Berbick)
and
MAB knocked out Naz(which of course didn't happen but ive lost count of the amount of times I've heard it)

I'm not excusing Duran. Hey, no-one forced him to dance the macarena with a chicken leg hanging out of his mouth. Let's keep it honest, though.

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
I would say their is a bit of a myth around their first bout as if your not 'up' on your boxing knowledge/haven't seen it or read the autobiography you might think that Duran absolutely bossed the first fight AND that SRL just danced around for the whole of the second.

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Funny thing is Duran had an excuse for Hearns but avoided him like the plague anyway..
Duran did well to make the weight If he was partying all the time..
Also why would he say "You fight him you beat him " to Leonard after losing to Hagler If the only reason he didn't beat Leonard twice was his partying.

Because he thought Leonard was a better fighter?

Ridiculous accusation john, you have my sympathy. Any fool knows they're better in the oven for a few minutes not microwaved.
A jar of liver kept overnight next to the hot water tank is a much better alternative...a bit smelly but you learn to live with it.

One thing I did admire about Duran was his confidence..
Takes a shed load when you're 5-7 to try to box Tommy on the outside..

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
I thought it was well documented by both fighters and teams that Duran partied hard after the first bout?
Not saying it wasn't a good win or that Leonard couldn't beat a prime Duran, just think it's daft to argue over something that is fact

Not arguing he didn't party..
Just think it isn't relevant..

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Hasn't it been documented by BOTH sides though that he did party and that he was well known to become a party animal after his bouts?

Scottrf said he liked it as well. I read it all and hated it. Not as much as No Ordinary Joe, but I am not sure I hate root canal surgery as much as I hate that book

Favourite boxing myth? That "No Ordinary Joe" is the worst boxing biography ever.
Truth is, it's an incredible read but Rowley is single handedly waging a war on the book to stop people reading it until he gets round to writing the definitive biography of Charley Burley in the hope that someone buys his book instead.

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Sad thing is Dave it may not be the worst. De La Hoya's gives it a bloody good run for its money.

It's the pictures of Oscar in ladies' undies that saves it from being the worst

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
I actually liked the undisputed truth. Don't take it all too seriously and it's very enjoyable. The soppy/cynical ending was a nice touch along with the cheesey but valid pigeon metaphor.

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
I may give it another go if there's pigeon metaphors fluttering around. Probably help it up the pecking order in the long run, perhaps claw it's way back into my affections.
Things is, I'd have to endure all those other pages filled with pointless boring stuff about being a gangster and drinking in bars aged 13 or whatever lying bullsh!t he was spewing. Also found it hard to read without hearing Tyson's lisping voice in my head which kept putting me off. Same reason I've never read "No Ordinary Joe"...not THAT one, the Joe Pasquale Story

There's one bit where Naomi Campbell beasts him with a strapon.

Joe pasquele? He seems like the type of guy that would take one, Naomi seems like the type of girl that'd wear one. Can't put both of them together though, must have happen back stage in the graham norton/Jonathan Ross show.
