your favorite boxing myth?
First topic message reminder :
thread title says it all really what is your favourite myth which has built up around a fighter or an event over the years?
my personal favourites:
Tyson was never the same after Cus died(despite the fact he he died early in his career and before he won the title against Berbick)
and
MAB knocked out Naz(which of course didn't happen but ive lost count of the amount of times I've heard it)

I'm from the school that believes ingle hamed probably does beat Barrera, but lest it grinds Chris' gears I'll concede that it's just an opinion and most definitely not a fact!
Likewise I think the honeyghan that beat curry, gives starling a much better fight... Stylistically he might never have beaten him, but the boxer fighter that fought curry was a different beast to the out and out slugger he became when champion.
I agree Honey had the skills in 86 to always trouble Don and Marlon..
Believe it or not I always felt Breland was all wrong for Honey..
Can't see any version of Honey getting past the jab with his defence..

Lloyd's love of a party was always going to seriously hamper him. Rumours abound that even Roberto Duran was overheard to say, "That boy could do with an early night once in a while!"TRUSSMAN66 wrote:milkyboy wrote:Anybody really think hamed thought he was going to lose to Barrera?

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Breland was such an anomaly as a Welter in terms of size and dimensions that it's hard to predict how Honeyghan might have fared at his best.....No real opponent of a similar ilk. Certainly the fast-twitching bundle of energy which was early Honeyghan (Shufford, Rosi and of course Curry fights), the one who moved his head and had speed to burn wouldn't have been outclassed against Breland like he was in 1990 - but it'd take a big leap of faith to say he'd win, I admit, given how he got swept aside when they did eventually meet. Starling was a mile behind when he stopped Breland in their first fight, too, so he didn't sink as often as made out in the pro ranks.
Speaking of Breland, how about another amateur star who never hit the expected heights as a pro....Howard Davis. Is it me, or is it a bit of a myth that he had the fastest hands (or nigh-on the fastest) in history? Granted, I've only seen the Fernandez, Watt and Rosario fights, but while he was no slow coach, he didn't appear to be in the same class as Camacho, Norris, Taylor, Leonard etc when it came to having blurred gloves. His speed has become almost legendary - possibly people getting too excited about him appearing to be an even more promising talent than Leonard in the '76 Olympics and taking home the Val Barker trophy?

Wetherspoons still do a "Curry Night" where you can finish one off in under 30 minutes with room to spare.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Breland v Honey was better than any party I've been to..

I dunno, they're difficult to tell apart from the men. Shaved heads, tattoos, bruised swollen knuckles, stubble and fresh stiches in facial injuries are no way to accurately determine gender in these places.
You'd love it...you could headbutt someone and fantasise it was your wife/son.

Possibly truss... He might have made a better fight of it than the actual one though (ie it might have taken more than a jab to knock him over ) .
I think honey might well have always struggled with breland from a styles perspective, he wasn't going to outbox him and he was always susceptible to an overhand right. The caveat is that I always thought breland was a bit fragile. If Lloyd did get through he might have taken him out. He struggled a bit with rosi for a few rounds and them sparked him. Rosi wasn't breland, but had that reach and awkwardness about him.
If anyone wants to know what a shot fighter looks like. Watch honeyghan curry followed by honeyghan breland.
It's like watching hagler Mugabi followed by mclellan or Norris v Mugabi. You have to pinch yourself to check its the same guy.

Strange career Davis. Like you I don't recall bring blown away by his handspeed. If I had to pick one guy for fastest hands it would be taylor. Combinations like a machine gun.

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Like I said, Honey became a real party boy after the win over Curry. He'd fallen so far that by the end of his career, he was getting changed in the corner of a squash court at a local sports centre where he was fighting and had to borrow a pair of trainers from someone as he couldn't afford proper boots

Didn't say that did I? But it's fair to say they were certainly a contributing factor to the manner in which they lost. Dedicate yourself to the sport and you'll certainly do better than you would if you phoned it in, slacked off in training or became a lover of the Colombian Marching powder. Hatton, Laing and any number of 80's HW can attest to thatTRUSSMAN66 wrote:Duran and Honey only lost because they partied so much..

Don't think we ever doubted you'd like to go a few rounds with young Rachel Dave. Though judging from your desperation, my money would be on an early stoppage.

Okay they didn't party too much and it didn't affect their careers...
Honey was certainly well managed..Shufford had a 10% Ko percentage...Rosi was average and he defended his title against light welters and journeyman....

She wouldn't be drinking tea but she would be guzzling pints of it. Besides which, once she was with me she'd cease to be "Froch's Mrs" so she'd naturally become a huge fan of everything I liked. Re: your favorite boxing myth?
I think one of boxing's best myths is Jack Johnson taking a dive against Jess Willard (due to the fact he was pictured shielding his eyes from the sun). I think it was more a case of Johnson growing old while fighting a younger, bigger, fitter opponent in 100 plus degree heat.
Johnson apparently bet $2.5k on himself the day before. Why would he do that if he was in the tank?
Another is McCall's "lucky punch" against Lewis. The guy was drilled for months to throw that combination and he'd almost landed it umpteen times in the opening round. Similarly, Hasim Rahman is also accused of getting lucky against Lewis. There wasn't anything lucky about that big right. He bulled Lennox back to the ropes and with the champion faffinf about with his gloves down, took the opportunity to banjo him!

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Arguably 'lucky punches' are a myth in themselves.
Unless you're falling over and chuck out an arm to steady yourself and catch your opponent, or maybe windmilling with your eyes shut, they're not lucky punches. You threw them, you wanted to land them, and you figured they'd hurt or do some damage if they did.

Re: your favorite boxing myth?
Leonard himself admitted he pressed for as quick a rematch as possible as he knew it'd give him an advantage due to Duran's rep for partying.
Doesn't mean it was a massive contributor to him winning, but silly to say it was irrelevant.

I don't believe there is a myth surrounding the Leonard-Duran rematch. Both fighters have openly admitted that Duran was but a shadow of the phenom that upset Sugar Ray in Montreal. He spent most of the interim living it large in Panamanian discos and only made weight by chomping down diuretics before the weigh-in.
