If he gets the bagel I'll laugh my head off. We'll never hear the end of it from lydian!

Maybe Masha asked Dimi to bring back some bakery goods to comfort her tonight

Unreal 5-0 with with three breaks of serve. Silver, as you are saying, Lydian will be pleased.

Re: US Open Day 7
That double Hand BackHand down the line and excellent upwards cross forehand were so special, no idea how Goffin could execute them that easy given the pace of the ball.
Goffin special so far takes him to 5-0 in the 1st set, where is Lydian?

Honestly Goffin was unplayable for a few points in that 1st set, but lets rewind that awesome FO encounter with his child hood hero RF which even RF found him unplayable at times there.

Re: US Open Day 7
Berdy was indeed looking well below his rank Silver. He's not the first top player to perform badly ahead of a Slam and then come good when it matters ; and he won't be the last.
That five-setter may well have been pivotal, as you say, in bringing him back into battle mode. I'd say he's in good shape for the latter stages.....

Agreed, lags. I have to admit that I want Cilic to get through Simon just so he can try and stop Berdych...I don't think any Federer supporter would be comfortable with that SF match! We'll see how he gets on against young Thiem first, though.
Goffin just had two more BPs, Dimi can't get on the board!

Re: US Open Day 7
Goffin goofups two crucial break points, I hope this doesn't turn into another Nick - Boredo match, Nick was leading 5-0 in the first set and won it and was leading 3-0 in the 2nd set to lose everything from there on.

I still have a feeling Monfils will find a way to lose this match.

Indeed IC, with Dimi breaking Goffin in the third already... And Monfils should not be able to lose it now, not against Gasquet.

Goffin looked like he was going to go but these last few games he became more competitive again.

...but then throws it all away with back-to-back doubles and loses the set in the end.

Re: US Open Day 7
There are plenty of exciting match-ups in R4. Really, only Fed vs Bautista-Agut looks somewhat boring to me, and even there - who knows what can happen if Fed loses sets to the likes of Granollers.laverfan wrote:Looking forward to Thiem-Berdych. Thiem!
As far as Thiem-Berdych goes I would expect Berdych to be a bridge too far for Thiem.

Re: US Open Day 7
Just watched some highlights of the Fed-Granno match. Fed looked fit and fast and was playing with great energy, although they didn't show much of the first few games !
He can look curiously diffident in matches at times. Looked really focused in this one. Apparently he lost the first 10 points of the match. Wonder when that last happened?

I have it on good authority that it last happened in his infamous match v Reto Scmidli, who secured a special place in history as the only player to double-bagel Federer.
Mind you ..... Fed was 10 years old at the time.

Re: US Open Day 7
Goffin showed his talent early on but think a) ran out of gas and b) didn't handle the pressure as well...6-0 is almost too good a start, I wonder if his mind raced ahead.
He still needs to bulk up further (good progress made but not enough) and he needs to get used to these situations more...remember its only over a month since he was playing Challengers week in, week out as a player ranked > 100. Fighting for a spot in the USO QFs was maybe a stretch to far given where he's come from. Still, he showed what he's capable of against another talented player.
Even Dimitrov said..."Whatever I was trying to do was just not enough. He was taking every ball on the rise, penetrating through the court, coming in, volleys. His game was just too good in the first set"....if he can extend that for 2-3 more sets then he can go very deep at all slams.
The experience will do him good, he'll learn a lot from it, dont forget Dimitrov himself used to play like this too...throwing in doubles at crunch points. I hope the result also gives Goffin heart and motivation to work like a Trojan in the gym for the rest of the season to be the threat he should/could be at AO15.
