DC 2014 Final - 21-23 Nov 2014
First topic message reminder :
SUI and FRA contest the final in a few days.
http://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=100021090
SUI has two players coming out of WTF, while FRA has depth in numbers.
SUI may never be at this point in the near future and can make the best of the presented opportunity. Federer and Wawrinka would like to add this to their CV, if they can. They will rue the opportunity that Lady Luck has thrown their way.
FRA is the last hurdle, and have some good players, a home court advantage and a surface that may favor them more the the SUI. H2Hs may be meaningless in such a contest given that any of the players on one side can beat players on the other side of the net.
ARG v ESP turned out to be an excellent DC final, with DelPotro, Monaco, Nalbandian trying their best to get the better of the other side.
Will this final live up to its billing?

And Stan wraps it up to win 6-2 in the fourth. This keeps Switzerland in it until Sunday whatever happens.

Looks like Stan's second service was crucial if the stats are anything to go by. He won 62% of his second serve points to just 33% for JWT.

Stan hit more FH and BH winners too. Sound pretty clinical.

Just caught a bit of that final set and it sounds like it's being played in Switzerland. Big mistake picking Tsonga IMO would have been better to pick Gasquet. He was great in the semi's.

Monfils takes 1st set 6-1. Only watching the scoreboard not the tennis, but I presume Monfils has really got the crowd warmed up winning that set.

If Monf does win it would set the tie up wonderfully for the next two days.

Monfils playing superbly it has to be said, really got the crowd going from the word go, Federer a little below par but really just has no answer for Monfils's power out there at the moment.

"Oh I want to be in that number, when La Monf goes marching in..."
Poor Stan might be roped into playing doubles now as there's no guarantee Tsonga won't beat Federer too.

Federer fairly passive here, cant tell if back or just no practice on surface.

wonder if Stan will make derogatory comments about Fed's level of play IF he goes on to lose this one

agree with the word passive, but I think we have to give Monfils credit here, he is playing really well. A minute ago they showed 32-14 up on Fed on winners.

You don't beat Monfils. Only Monfils can beat Monfils. Seriously though, I've never seen Monfils lose a match when he's played well right the way through it (although admittedly he's only done that about 3 times in his whole career).

credit to Monfils is certainly due. Not often you see Federer blasted off the court like this.

Here's the kiss of death:
"Federer has yet to break Monfils serve. Last time he didn't break serve in best of 5: London Olympics final. Last time best-of-5 clay: never"

On the bright side for the Swiss, Feds back doesnt look broken exactly. Hes maybe a tad slower than normal, but could be the clay

What's Monfils going to be like serving it out then, that is the question, if he can keep up this level it look like Federer has got nothing to me. But what about the mental side at the real moment of truth?
Especially when we consider that this could be the biggest win of his career?

Monfils has dictated play very well.
Federer will have to win the other Singles for SUI to have any chance, all the pressure on him.

Do you think Federer will be thrown into the doubles tomorrow now? If he's ailing then doubles might be less taxing on him, although they'll be putting all their eggs in one basket. I'd fancy Stan to beat Monfils as, let's face it, the odds of La Monf playing two good matches in a row aren't very high.

Federer's ultimate revenge:
"Monfils routines Federer 6-1, 6-4, 6-3, leveling the #DavisCup final at 1-1. Expecting Lüthi to choose Wawrinka/Chiudinelli for the doubles."

Looks like the final is well poised. Stan will have to play tomorrow now and, assuming France still win the doubles, there will be huge pressure on Stan in the final singles even if Roger can beat JWT. France now slight favourites to me.

No surprise really. Monfils should have duffed a fit Federer up in three/four in New York. No surprise he's dismantled a wounded one.

Soo everyone, big question. Who plays the doubles? Do they risk ruining Stan for the reverse singles? Does Tsonga play? Heck does Roger even have a go? The Swiss must be worried now that they may not win 3 singles matches

Re: DC 2014 Final - 21-23 Nov 2014
It was ballsy not to put a premium on the doubles by the Swiss. Surely they must put a strong pairing. Stan has to play.
I am still apprehensive with Gasquet being in there and not Tsonga.

Imagine Fedrinka 4-4 in the 5th with break point and before Benny serves Mirka shouts out!!!

I hope Federer doesn't play tomorrow. Just seen the match highlights and he won't have anything left for Sunday where I think it could go right down to the wire.
Stan is going to have to carry this one I'm afraid. Be the man!

Re: DC 2014 Final - 21-23 Nov 2014
Yes but doubles is a lot less physically demanding compared to singles, so with his injury he could actually have a greater positive impact in the doubles than with the singles (unless his back recovers).
If his back is the way it is, I think it's unlikely he'll beat Tsonga- so the doubles match really is crucial. And Fed even with his injury is better than the alternatives in the Swiss team.

Wouldn't call it a lot less demanding. It's not like he is going to dine out at the net on that one. Roger needs a rest day.
Given Tsonga's performance today, I think Federer would have a great chance come Sunday.

Well well well. The Swiss surely need to win this match now, given that both the French singles players are being rested. Even if they do, Monfils was in such good form that the Swiss can't necessarily rely on Stan! Fascinating two days ahead.

Federer should be playing as it's his fault he lost and they're tied at 1-1. I feel sorry for Stan who is being "punished" for Federer's failure by having to play doubles.

I don't blame him, their national anthem is terrible, unlike the Swiss flag which is a big plus.
