SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
SURREY HAVE NAMED A THIRTEEN MAN SQUAD FOR THE LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AGAINST ESSEX AT COLCHESTER STARTING ON FRIDAY.
Kumar Sangakkara is unavailable for selection due to Sri Lanka’s upcoming Test Series against India.
The Surrey squad to play Essex in the LV=County Championship at Colchester on Friday 7th August, Saturday 8th August, Sunday 9th August and Monday 10th August :
Gareth Batty (capt)
Zafar Ansari
James Burke
Rory Burns
Sam Curran
Tom Curran
Steven Davies
Jade Dernbach
aneesh kapil
Arun Harinath
Jason Roy
Dominic Sibley
Gary Wilson
sibley isn't in form so find it strange he is in the squad over kapil (back to back hundreds)
the other place between burke and jade maybe burke shading it
over to you chaps

Re: SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Hi Jimbob - thanks for starting this one. Agree it's a bit of a surprise to see Sibley in the squad. I think there's a fair chance that Harinath would replace Sanga and that the two to miss out might well be Sibley and Dernbach (unless any other bowler, eg Curran minor, might benefit from a rest). Although Burke can be expensive at times he does take wickets.

Unfortunate for Foakes that.
Would imagine that means Kapil and Dernbach miss out, but wouldn't be surprised to see one if the young seamers rested - would make sense the more I think about it

I see from Essex website that they are missing a few regulars through injury: "Ryan ten Doeschate sustained a blow on his knee during Wednesday’s victory over Middlesex; Graham Napier has a calf strain; Jesse Ryder is suffering with a back problem, while David Masters is struggling with a niggling injury"

Re: SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Sibley and Kapil missed out. I'm a bit puzzled by team selection. I'd have thought if we had five front line bowlers in Curran x2 + Dernbach + Batty + Ansari it would have made sense to have Kapil (or possibly Sibley) as another front line batsman rather than Burke.....

201-4 now - getting away from us; need another wicket quickly. Not sure why Burke has only bowled 3 - OK they've been expensive but so have the Currans.

Have to say I was a little bemused by the team selection also - we don't need to be gambling with one less batsman at this stage of the season, especially as we have ansariforengland and Norah who can take strain off the seamers.
And not pleased to see Burke bowl so few overs either

Re: SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Essex all out 369, with Ansari taking 5 - 108.
But then Ansari is out cheaply in Surrey's reply. OK Ansari didn't have all that lengthy a bowl today, but there was clear case for opening with Burns and Harinath... Surrey currently 33 -1 with Panesar coming on to bowl very early.

Surrey 61 - 1 at lunch. Decent enough start to the reply. Harinath already on to 29*.

106 - 3 Davies bowled by Panesar. Earlier Panesar had dismissed Harinath. We could be in trouble here to the spin.

Glam in more than trouble, they're in deep deep guano: a net minus seven for five at tea.

194 - 5 at tea, with first innings deficit of 175 . Hmmm. Important session coming up.

Re: SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
301-7 represents an excellent recovery from 112 -4. (Essex lost their 4th wicket, similarly, at 115).
Burns 157*
He was overdue a big innings or two - and he certainly got one here. Harold, second highest scorer with just 37; however, he, Burke and Norah scored some useful runs and also kept Burns company for quite a long period.
Both sides have used over 50 overs of spin by the end of day 2.
We've already secured two more bonus points that Glam, who are facing likely defeat, as Gloucs will need to score 108 in their second innings.

Re: SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
346 all out - just short of a fourth batting point
But a good knock from Curran Minor of 30*. Looks like the two Currans could be very handy lower order batsmen. In the end Surrey kept deficit down to 23. We never quite made up for the low scores of some of the top order batsmen, but Burns was magnificent and there were handy contributions from most of the lower order.
Plenty of time left in this match - any result is still possible.

Good effort by the lower order to stick around with burns to all but restore parity when it looked like we'd have a significant deficit

No sign of Dernbach yet in Essex's second innings. Is he injured or are we using that rare team tactic of the Specialist [non-batsman at] Number 11?

As Essex take away the game this afternoon, good news from elsewhere as Gloucestershire best Glamorgan convincingly.

Obviously a spinners paradise, but the team selection still looks more and more baffling.

49 overs so far by our "spin twins" and just 3 wickets. Looks like we're hoping they'll declare and set us a target. Still no Burke (fast becoming the new Linley).

No wickets but at below 3 runs an over it'll be unlikely they'll want to declare tonight/overnight - so batting for a draw in theory becomes easier

Re: SURREY vs ESSEX LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Bit of a stalemate kind of day. The weather forecast is a bit indeterminate for tomorrow - it's possible there may be a bit of rain in the middle of the day. A draw would be very acceptable result for us considering Glamorgan gained very few points from their latest loss.

If this weather comes off, coupled with the fact Essex although on top, haven't really made great strides towards a safe target, means a draw is the most likely outcome tomorrow. A Surrey win the least likely result however.

With the rain about literally no point risking having a dart - take the draw from a game where we have been behind and move on in my opinion
