Nacewa and Qovu out of RWC Empty Nacewa and Qovu out of RWC

Post by Adam D Fri 10 Jun 2011, 7:18 am

Citing personal commitments Europe based players Isa Nacewa and Jone Qovu have today both respectfully declined the invitation to be part of the Flying Fijians squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Despite ruling himself out of selection Leinster’s Nacewa, the first overseas player to be voted Ireland’s player of the year, believes the Flying Fijians will be very competitive at the Rugby World Cup and wished the team the very best.

“My pregnant wife and my twin girls are my number one priority at the moment, however I wish the Fiji team and management all the best in the exciting year that follows and especially at the Rugby World Cup,” Nacewa said.

“Fiji has a competitive team at the World Cup and one that will go a long way.”

Domestic commitments have also ruled out Racing Metro 92’s Jone Qovu from RWC participation.

“My wife is pregnant and my main focus now is looking after her,” Qovu said.

“I am at ease with this decision as I know there are more than enough players around who can replace me.”

Flying Fijians coach Sam Domoni, while disappointed with the news, was pragmatic about the reasons given.

“Players, like Nacewa and Qovu, need to look after their young families welfare and that’s a priority for any player,” Domoni said.

“The decision they’ve made is respected and we now need to move forward as a team with the players we have got.”

The Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) training squad switches camp this Sunday from Suva to Sigatoka as PNC preparations get into gear. The Flying Fijians will play their first game against Tonga on 2 July at Lautoka’s Churchill Park.

Understandable. Certainly not surprised in case of Nacewa.

Not surprised by Nacewa. Qovu is certainly surprising though. He still has another World Cup in him though. Oh for the days when the husband was expected not to be around when the child was born eh?

Nacewas 'personal commitments' is a polite way of saying "What part of 'I'll never play for you again' didn't you understand?"

Still, all done with now, and we don't lose him for the start of the season, so I'm not complaining.

Nacewa not up for playing for fiji? ...I would have been very surprised to hear anything different.

His experience/skill will be vital for Leinster in the magners(new sponsor name?? what was it again?) during the World cup....me happy with that Smile

I agree to be honest. I'm not questioning his commitment to his family but if he was given the call-up to the All Blacks? I think he'd go. It's special to play in a World Cup, it's much more special to represent your country in a World Cup. Nacewa does not have the option of the latter Sad

I think thats quite a valid reason TBH... a players playing life is quite short... the man needed to look after his long term interests..

Nothing. Nacewa has Fijian heritage but he isn't Fijian. He played for them (a whopping three minutes off the bench) when he was young because they told him he would still be eligible to represent the All Blacks- obviously he isn't. And he hasn't played for them ever since.

I'm a big fan of Nacewa. Wonderful player. Part of me is disappointed (though not surprised) that he won't be at the World Cup, especially playing for an exciting Tier 2 nation with potential to do well.

3 minutes can change a life. Just ask Boris 'Broomcupboard' Becker!

But Notch thats his own fault for not checking out the rules with the IRB 1st,

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, but lets be honest he would never have made the All Blacks squad anyway.

Fingers crossed for Nacewa to have a baby boy. Help to even the numbers in the household and also a potential player for Ireland down the line!
