I mean are we even sure Gordon isn't a one year wonder who never stuck around for his drop off season.
A lot of hype for a guy who's had more near comebacks than games played in years

Nah the guy can play. I've read rumours he was never really that interested in football though.GSC wrote:I mean are we even sure Gordon isn't a one year wonder who never stuck around for his drop off season.

Carr with a questionable pick, not for the first time. Probably not for the last
Unless he finds consistency he ain't making Vegas. Playing nowhere near a $25m a year QB

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
Bit of a strange one this week.
Browns win
Falcon's vaunted D looked like swiss cheese
Jags comer in touted as a championship team and their O goes nowhere
Buffalo play lights out after spending 2 weeks out Browning the Browns
Skins O shows schizophrenic tendencies again
Dallas O looks pitiful
Pats O looks woeful
I love it from a spectators POV, and maybe its what the league wants with parity. But its got to be a pundits nightmare!
And regardless of it being against the Skins, that roughing the passer penalty was ridiculous. I'm all in favour of rooting out dangerous/nasty play, but how is a guy sacking a QB full frontal supposed to NOT fall on top of him?

And the ridiculous thing is they’re meant to be run stoppers, but they’ve arguably been worse at stopping the run than the pass through three weeks. Serious issues on D

With the Browns losing, the team that's gone the longest without a win is the Texans. Next three games look very winnable, but if they keep struggling what do you do with that roster?
Also, though three games in is obviously still very early, who takes the first QB in the draft? If you look at the winless teams, the Cardinals just drafted one, and it still seems a little early for the Texans to give up on Watson(?), which leaves the Raiders (if they did, would they keep Carr around?).
If you look at the other teams with losing records so far, the Seahawks, Falcons, Lions and Colts (and 49ers?) are surely set, and the Bills and Jets just took one. That leaves the Cowboys, Chargers, Patriots and Giants (and at .500 the Steelers?) who might if they found themselves in the position, but aren't necessarily desperate.

Can the fall of Corey Coleman be any less gracious? Demand to be traded then get cut from a practice squad. All after being taken, effectively, as a 1st pick. Ouch.

I seem to say this every year but.... can we all agree that the standard of officiating this season has been diabolical?
I watched the Browns/Raiders game last night and saw a potential big play by Marshawn Lynch called back cos of the most ludicrous early whistle for stoppage of forward progress I've ever seen.... he was being tackled by one guy and was clearly still making progress through a tackle he ultimately broke... scandalous stuff!
Then how that David Carr fumble wasn't a fumble is just beyond me.

it was atrocious, it wasn't just those instances either.
In the same game Arden Key got flagged for roughing the passer which was nonsense and then the booth review on the spot of the ball was a bit dodgy too
I don't think I've ever been so gutted to score a last minute 2pt conversion. I'd already set my heart on Nick Bosa in the draft

It's not an excuse but I don't think anyone could have gone down to NO last night and beaten the Saints, they were on fire, most notably Brees. Once he got the record the win was nailed on.
Skins had good moments but they can't seem to string a drive together on O and the D are up and down each game. Too many busted coverages left Brees too many options. If you ask me, next 3 games decide our season. if we can come out at least 4-3 we have a chance to take the division as nobody is unbeatable, but if we lose to both Carolina and the Pokes (heaven forbid we lose to the Giants!) I think we're done.

9 wins will win the NFC East this year I think - so even if you end up 3-4 you'll still be in it I think Skins fans. Likely a week 17 matchup decides it

Well the Giants and Cowboys are beatable. We did bolster the DL and its proven not too shabby at stopping the run through 4 games, but the DB's are the issue. Maybe they'll find their feet soon, but some of the coverage was terrible Monday. Beckham Jr must be licking his lips, albeit Manning doesn't scare me. If they can contain Elliot and Barkley, then maybe 4- or 5-2 isn't beyond credible.

Hard to know what to make of the NFC East
Giants & Cowboys O's have not got going at all
Eagles spluttering & have lost Ajayi
Skins very hit and miss
As Olly said 9 wins are probably enough
Divisional games will determine it
Would pick Skins ATM

After last night the Eagles look like they are getting into gear and the Giants are what I thought at the start, a good young QB shy of a good offense.
Sorry Eli, you've had your day, time to recognise it. Your brother got lucky with a franchise that had a great D and just needed an experienced QB that wouldn't stuff it up (and he nearly managed that too). I can't see the Giants keeping you after this year and I can't see where you can go at this point.

Yeah I think Eli is toast... Rivers and Roethlisberger still going along reasonably well, but it is clear (and has been for a few years) Manning is the first of that super draft to need to hit the shelf... if you ignore JP Losman...

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
Rivers is arguably playing as well as any QB in the league. I've always thought of him as a good team shy of a SB win, and if their D was capable the Chargers would be championship material this year, maybe they already are. Its between them and the Chiefs for the div but the Chiefs already have a big margin to be overcome, at 5-0. I'd rate the Chargers as a good bet for a wildcard at least.
Big Ben knows the writing is on the wall. If he doesn't step up the rest of this season I reckon they will talk him into retirement. He's still capable of a pro bowl season but I don't know if he can carry them in the absence of Bell.
And this is where Manning falls down. Barkley can move the ball but it needs the passing game to take the focus off him. It's not like he has only one weapon in OBJ, but he made some real bad decisions/throws so far, especially Thursday night. For a guy with his pedigree and SB's under his belt his arm might become an issue but his brain shouldn't, and from some of his throws his arm isn't an issue. I wonder if he truly still wants it.

That Raiders performance today was disgusting. Actually felt sorry for Carr, loads of fans online calling for his head but I don't know what he was meant to do today. His O-line offered him nothing, his coaches play calling offered him nothing. Defense is just plain garbage there is no other word for it. The second Seattle TD summed them up when Wilson fumbled the snap and still managed to throw for the score
We play fellow 1 win teams Colts, 49ers and Cardinals in 3 of our next 4 games. Quite confident well come out of that easily cemented as the worst team in the NFL

I was at the game last night and was largely disappointed in the play calling from Oakland. I'm hardly a Gruden expert, because I only properly got into the NFL at the end of his first run with Tampa, but it was so negative.
Too many short passes, screens and runs that weren't going anywhere. I know that Seattle was getting pressure on Carr, and a screen / quick release game is a good counter to that, but they were doing it immediately from drive 1... I'm sure they ran on 3rd&8 or something on the opening drive after Lynch has run straight at the line for the first two snaps

If you look at points differential (scored - conceded) the Rams are the best team so far (+78) and the Chiefs are third (+43). In second (+76), we somehow find the Ravens. The Bears are the only other team that hasn't given up 100 points yet, and they've played a game less. Has their schedule been that easy or are they actually sort of good?

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
Of those 4 I'd rank the defences Rams 1st, Ravens 2nd, Bears 3rd (maybe 2nd?) and Chiefs quite a way down the league. The Chiefs are up there in differential because their O can almost score at will. With a good D they'd probably be #1. The other 'problem' for the Chiefs is while they are scoring prolifically, they are doing so too quickly at times. Take MNF. If they hadn't left over 3 minutes on the game clock, that could very well have been a win. They need to learn to grind the clock a bit more and give their D a breather. That's where the Rams and Ravens are at, and why I'd back both to be division winners. Chiefs will probably win their division, but don't rule out the Chargers. Bears should win theirs, but you can never rule the Packers out.

I'm not sure the Bears are actually good - I definitely still fancy the Packers and Vikings to finish above them in that division.
Also agree with you re: the Chiefs - whilst obviously that offence is amazing, they might need to slightly alter their game to take into account just how bad their defence is and see if they can do longer, time consuming drives to keep the D off the field.
I also think the Ravens are being massively underrated nationally. That D is incredible, and they've just come off a tough three game road stretch tied atop their division, and in a great spot

That pretty much set the tone for the day that opening drive. I think our only play for more than 20 yards was a pass to Cooper that was pulled back on a holding call. It really was a dreadful day, Kolton Miller was getting terrored all day and his game was summed up when he allowed the strip sack and failed to cover the live ball. Only bright spark was Arden Key's first sack but even that was down to poor play from Wilson just holding on to the ball wayyyyyyyyyyy too long
Its come out that we're looking to trade Cooper and Joseph before the deadline, we're after a first rounder for Cooper (not happening), be lucky to get anything for Joseph, always injured and even when fit can't beat a very poor and 35 year old Reggie Nelson to a starting position
The remaining games of this year and the whole 2019 seasons are going to be long ones for raiders fans as we're in full on build mode for Vegas in 2020

While I get the point that the Cards are awful with scoring, but when they are the second worst in points against (and the Falcons have been decimated by injuries) I think its their D that needs a close look too, if not more than the O. Firing your OC at nor even mid season with a rookie QB seems a bit dysfunctional to me.
