Japan 2019 - Pool A Ireland Japan Russia Samoa Scotland
First topic message reminder :
Japan 30-10 Russia
Ireland 27-3 Scotland
Russia 9-34 Samoa
Japan 19-12 Ireland
Scotland 34-0 Samoa
Ireland 35-0 Russia
Japan 38-19 Samoa
Scotland 61-0 Russia
12 October 2019 Ireland v Samoa Fukuoka Hakatanomori Stadium, Fukuoka
13 October 2019 Japan v Scotland International Stadium Yokohama, Yokohama
Two games left. If Ireland get a TBP win on Saturday they qualify for the quarter finals irrespective of the result on Sunday. Any other result and they need to wait and see what happens between Japan and Scotland.
Any win for Japan and they will top the group (in fact a draw or losing with two bonus points will guarantee the same)
Most interesting scenario is if Ireland win without a bonus point - opening up a chance for Scotland to top the group if all 3 teams end up on 15pts and Scotland are able to keep their points difference ahead of Ireland.
Team | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Tries | PF | PA | +/- | BP | Points |

Scotland | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 13 | 98 | 27 | 71 | 2 | 10 |

So if Ireland bludgeon Japan with dull, cold-weather NH real man's rugby, you'll be seeking drug tests all round?

Vasily Artimyev playing at 15 for Russia is an Irish guy, educated in Blackrock college and former Leinster academy player. Decent player.

There was some blocking for that Japan try, probably should not have been allowed.

He has had a pretty good game until you wrote that and he grubbed kicked the ball to the Japanese back three... love the trash though. Looks like Russia’s most famous rugby player Prince Alexander Obolensky.

Not a great accomplished performance by Japan but they at least secured the bonus point.

Despite the Japanese getting a bonus point I have been very impressed with Russia today. Good set piece, well organised playing some positive rugby. Look very much a Lyn Jones coached team. Obviously not going to make waves in the overall tournament but they have played admirably in their second ever RWC

At least they didn't choke plus they played well in parts.
Can we still use the term Japs?

Not if you want to be nice to nice people hosting a WC. It's nice to be nice.

Yeah, can we refrain from using the term 'japs' to describe countrymen of the host nation? Just a thought.
Some nice rugby in places from Japan, although not the complete performance they might've hoped for. In part, that's down to some excellent work from Russia who exceeded expectations. Some silly Japanese errors though, hope they can use the crowd to up their game against the stronger sides in the pool.

There wasn't enough today to worry Ireland and Scotland, but it was the opener and it was put to bed quite comfortably in the end. They beat South Africa in 2015 and went out because they didn't take any bonus points in their wins against Samoa or USA (or a lbp against Scotland), so at least today they've managed to get a try bonus point.
We could see Scotland beat Ireland, Ireland beat Japan and Japan beat Scotland (or flip it) so the bonus points could be important.

That is what I thought, just checking as I haven't used that term for many years due to it not being very nice, so was a little surprised to see it being used on here.

Japan were really poor, but they will improve. This game should have shaken off the nerves. They are obviously very fit, they like playing at a high tempo and the offloading was good. The general passing though was very poor and far too often the pass would stop the receiver in his tracks. They were not helped by the ref allowing a free-for-all at the breakdown but they really needed to look after their own ball better.
I would not write them off at all and feel they could cause problems for the two higher ranked sides, but will need to play much closer to their potential than they did today.

It will bae interesting to see how Samoa go. There isn’t much between Samoa and Japan, if either of those two target Scotland or Ireland as the big scalp they want and get their best form in action it could make the last round of this pool very exciting.
I agree that Japan didn’t play as well as I expected they would but they got the BP. Russia were a far more accomplished team than I presumed they would be.

By all accounts Samoa are fairly poor, they have steadily been going backwards for a while now. Fiji are the better of the three pacific islands sides.

They maybe going backwards compared to their former heights but they still a team who have enough talent in their side to pull out a big game and a result.

Kinda something that might come back and haunt someone given France's respectable record in the competition.

In 1970, fashion designer Kenzo had a label in Paris called Jungle Jap. His Japanese friends advised him against it, but he went ahead, out of a sense of mischief. When he tried to sell it in America, the Japanese community there was outraged, and sued him, saying it was an ethnic slur. he agreed to stop using it. Today he often mentions it as a mistake he made by being tone deaf to social issues.Galted wrote:日本語で「ジャップ」と言えますか?

Aside from nerves, I think Japan look like a team that doesn't know how to play with the favourites tag. They look like a team set up to counter attack, basically. Expect them to be much improved against Scotland, but I think they'll be steamrolled by Ireland.
Interesting titbit about Kenzo. I wear Kenzo aftershave.

There was a missing element today and that could be it. They should be favourites vs Samoa but obviously under dogs in their games vs Ireland and Scotland. Will they lose to Sami but take the Irish and Scots? Unlikely but it would make the pool interesting

Maybe it was the nerves of the big occasion but surely those same nerves will be there when playing the “bigger” teams?
Japan looked pretty average really. They have pace but they lack the structure and physicality to play multi phase rugby.
Ireland will out muscle them and Scotland will just play even less structured rugby which will pull Japan into the Finnsanity resulting in them shipping half a dozen tries.

Not unexpected news about Hamish Watson, bearing in mind how severe the injury looked and how it was caused, but a real shame for the lad. He had the potential to become a real star of this tournament. In fact (and sorry Scottish fans) in a better team he would already be a world star.

Re: Japan 2019 - Pool A Ireland Japan Russia Samoa Scotland
Anyway, the first game celebrations are well and truly over for Ireland. The Monday morning video nasty session has already taken place. Players that were feeling great immediately after the game will be feeling a little humbled by the mistakes reel - grumbles of "it wasn't f**kin' my fault. He made me do it" will be prowling around the corridors.
So next up, Japan. Which players need a slap around the ear from internet warrior coaches? Which players need a well earned rest? How do you put the wildcat Japanese in a sack when you're playing in their home turf and you don't know how many Samurai warriors are in the crowd? All them kinda questions need answering pretty damn quick before the game. So all you regular Irish posters get onto it now! Joe is waiting for all the info, and he ain't a patient man.

Hamish is the kind of explosive player that lives on the edge of catching one of these injuries - rather like O'Brien. I know this actual injury wasn't self induced but there is the game of rugby. In order to give it your all, you also accept that your moments may be brief.
Hate to see those moments when instinctively as a human you pick up on the very early signs that things don't look good when players go down.

Tough luck on a brilliant player. Scotland need to rally together - if there are any cracks in the camp, they'll be creaking at the moment, and disunity could easily see them knocked out in the groups. Focusing on getting a QF, and not caring what happens after that, should be the focus. Then you can review Townsend's position when you're home.

Russia go with an unchanged side against Samoa in the game most likely to give them an upset.

Slightly harsh Yello Card against Samoa imo - but completely within the guidance. Contact made with the dead by the shoulder, as arms in front not red, but no mitigation for the ball carrier dropping and tackler being bent at the waist to 90 degrees.

Not harsh at all, and we've just had another one. Both could easily be reds, on the same man, and I hope this one is frankly as it's wild and reckless.
