First topic message reminder :

Jacks, Crawley, Hain, Stokes, Salt (WK), Lawrence, Gregory, Overton, Saqib, Ball, Parkinson?

Will MacPherson suggests Hales won’t be picked, which is a bit odd given they hinted he would get a chance this summer.

You also have Vince, Duckett and keep an eye out for Harry Brook.

150 for Root, brought up with that late cut he loves so much. clap

India have lost their way a little. They've bowled very poorly to Moeen post-tea. Missing Ashwin? Most probably. And Moeen may have a part to play in the third innings.

Decent bowling from Sharma, that's how to get Moeen. Useful 27 from Moeen, Curran and Robinson will be looking to emulate that.

Nope, Curran won't be emulating that, he's out to a similar good nut from Sharma. Seven down, trail by 23. Still want 70+ from this position.

Moeen gone to a low slips catch...checking , but that is a clean catch. A very good one , too by Kohli.

Useful 27. Pity he didn't stay a bit longer as the bowlers must be seriously tiring and there will come a time to plunder soon , I would think. Think he did the right thing in supporting Root as England inch towards a lead ...

Oh dear : Curran gone first ball ! Good bit of bowling...

India roaring back into the game just as it seemed to be slipping away from them.

Curran intrigues me as a batsman. I'm not sure if it's true or just my perception of him but he seems to bat better in pressure situations.

Tough task to get another 70 from here , I think. Wickets have revived the bowlers , and really only Robinson with serious batting credentials to help Root now.

Ishant was poor earlier on , I thought. But he's done really well to grab those two wickets. England were almost poised to go into full-on attack had Moeen stayed in.

Good contest , this.

Possibly true. Though one really can't read anything in to a first ball dismissal - can happen to anyone.

Was actually looking forward to seeing him play with a bit of a free hand this evening ; but you can't have everything I guess. Glad that England have actually batted like a proper Test team today.

Will be tough to add another 70 or so to get that 50 lead, but Root's still there and Robinson has already shown his credentials with the bat v New Zealand. Can't anticipate Wood or Anderson hanging around for long...though there was that monster stand between Root and Anderson in 2014, and Wood can hit a good long ball.

Had to go out for much of the day and could only follow the game time to time on cricinfo. But I knew it after the first half-hour, the day would be a hard one. Poor captaincy from Kohli that started before toss, never improved. Even now, he's not bringing Bumrah back, waiting for Robinson to settle down! I know Jasprit has had long spells and a tough shift, but he's the only one who can get through lower orders. Give him a 3 or 4 overs and see. If not working, take him off. But not Virat!

That was a classic ! Ultimate flat pitch , of course : think the Indian number ten or eleven got about fifty too. Really wish Jimmy had made it to his hundred...

Wood can indeed whack a few on his day.

Siraj getting flustered here ... Three lbw calls turned down and Kohli won't risk his last review despite the bowler's entreaties.

Third one might have been worth a try ? No - all "umpire's call".

Drinks again.

Three 'umpire's call' LBW shouts by Siraj all rejected by Michael Gough...the last one with a smile. Love it.

England close to hitting the front. 70 minutes left in the day.

Splendid innings from Joe Root again. And he's very much trusting Robinson to do the job, though he managed to retain strike of the Jadeja over this time. Bairstow also played a fine hand. Moeen didn't do any worse than the 20 Somethings who are seemingly specialist bats. But though I like Moeen, just relieved that he didn't go on to do serious damage, was just beginning to roll when Ishant intervened.

Robinson's played 20 balls already. But since he's not looking very comfortable and England not yet into the lead and building, Kohli not thinking of Bumrah yet! What a clown!

Tough dismissal for Robinson. Time for Root to get a little busier if he wants a chance of another double century.

And now he's got him ...umpire gave it , but it looked more "missing" than the last couple ! Siraj happy but to be honest he was a bit lucky as that was about a micron from being overturned.

Eight down. Still behind. England falling away a bit here.

msp : I get why you'd want Bumrah on ; but in truth he was getting a bit ragged in his last spell - bowled a string of no balls and didn't look his normal self. I imagine he will be called on if this lasts much longer ; but the others have taken three for not many since Moeen's wicket so not too bad really.

England might have lost their way a bit here. Root must be tired ; and Wood is probably intent on not getting out at this point. But the result is that they're going nowhere at present . More or less level now. But they'd want to add a few more considering the strong position they were in until Moeen got out.
Root intent on keeping the strike for now.

Review against Root for lbw : could be close...no , stays umpire's call.

Close indeed.

England 1 hit away from first innings lead. But Root is as calm as ever. Refused a couple of singles, but he looks in total control out there.

Now Root gets the right side of an 'umpire's call'; one that didn't look remotely out in real time.

No wonder Kohli was saying 'for goodness sake'.

England inching along, to that first innings lead. Shami not creating much of a challenge to the number 10, Wood seems to be negotiating him rather comfortably.

England in the lead and Root drags his average over 50 with the same shot. If he can stay not out he'll keep it there!

Been a solid batting effort on a good track from England. Root's led the way and most of his team have supported the innings.

Bumrah back in and back to bowling no-balls. And a second no-ball.

To add to the concerns, Bumrah is struggling clearly with his landing, another no-ball. If one of those Bumrah yorkers would turn out to be a no-ball... That's all that we need to make the day!

Oh dear, a mix up between Yorkshire and Durham. Four wickets in the last hour and a bit and India won't be facing as big a deficit as they may have anticipated at 16:00.

Time for Root to play some T20 shots.

Run out . Annoying. Wasn't two there , at the end of a long day for Root.
Wood smart enough to be the one to walk off.

No serious lead coming now I'm afraid. Still at least they've got their nose in front.

England don't need to score runs to increase their lead...Bumrah is overstepping and doing the hard work for them. Eight ball over with Anderson standing up to Bumrah's intimidation.

The length of that over also meaning India won't be batting tonight.

No hang on it's a nine-ball over! Bumrah's all over the shop.

Ten?!!! Four no-balls! Anderson still keeps him out.

Bumrah working Jimmy over here ...hits him on the helmet , in the chest ...another short one...

Don't want him injured - think about declaring ?

I guess they're still collecting no balls Smile

Survived the over ...oh no , not yet - a third no ball ! Still going...and a fourth no ball !

This is slightly ridiculous.

Bumrah with that run up is always susceptible to overstepping, once it starts going wrong the arms seems to straighten a lot more too.

Don't think Root would want to expose Anderson too much after that last over. Think he should play his shots now, even if there are only a few minutes to stumps.
