GRAND NATIONAL WEIGHTS Empty Re: GRAND NATIONAL WEIGHTS

Always difficult to pinpoint the winner as soon as the weights are out however i've been sweet on Chief Dan George for a race like this since it won at Cheltenham last year. It didn't quite get in last year but has now been alloted a racing weight, i'd rather it didn't run at this years festival though as i never think that's ideal prep for the National. Also like the look of State of Play, 5lb lower than when finishing third last year. Be interested to see how West End Rocker performs at Haydock in the National Trial on Saturday, his victory at Warwick was very decent, the second in that race, Minella Boys in my opinion is a real national horse but is not entered this year. Finally, Oscar Time, second in the Irish National last year looks a very interesting prospect, by Oscar, out of Saddlers Wells, this animal has bags of stamina and looks the ideal sort for this race ... the one down side in some peoples eyes, and it's not a complete negative to me, is that it will more than likely be ridden by Robert Whaley-Cohen. Certainly not the worst jockey in the world and as displayed when winning the KG on Long Run he has enough about him and has ridden a winner over the national fences before. If someone held a gun to my head :shooter: and i had to commit to one horse at this stage then it would be Oscar Time. . . . . . . We've gotta get through Cheltenham yet though !!!!!!

Yes Grahame......I think Sam Waley Cohen, on a horse around Aintree, should be seen as a positive, he's proved himself a very capable jockey over the National fences.

You've got your Waley-Cohens mixed up btw, Robert's Sam's dad but I'm sure you knew that Very Happy

Well spotted Solerina .... another schoolboy error by me. :yellow card: Yep, I meant Sam. I'm presuming he'd ride Oscar Time as it's owned by his father, or part owned i think, so i would have thought there is a good chance he'd take the saddle for the National although Robbie Power rode him in the Irish National last year though. I think Sam does get a bit of a hard time from certain quarters but at the end of the day it's up to the connections of a horse who they put up to ride it, i'm sure Nicky Henderson would have alot to say if he didn't think Sam was good enough to ride Long Run but he seems quite happy with Robert Whaley-Cohens wishes to allow his son to keep the ride (mind you he is a wealthy owner so i guess he wouldn't really argue). Anyway, i've gone a little off track as this is a Grand National thread .... maybe we should start a thread about the merits of amateur jockeys !

Yes.....I'm sure Nicky Henderson is more than happy for Sam to ride Oscar Time.... tho' as you say Robert Waley-Cohen is a wealthy owner, and he's the one paying the bills.

It reminds me of the JP Magnier/Rhinestone Cowboy thing.

Anyway, back on track......I really fancy Big Fella Thanks, so far, for the National.

Solerina

LOL! I've just had to edit this..........I'd put Long Run there instead of Oscar Time..........me and you might start getting our facts right soon Grahame.

I had GALANT NUIT down as a real National horse after a real solid effort in last years Kim Muir(close 3rd to Ballabriggs) but alas 137 probably wont get him in the line up.If he did sneak in then i reckon hes got all the attributes to run a stormer.Backed BIG FELLA THANKS in last years to win a tidy sum,he ran too free early on but he jumped round like a real pro,if he can be switched off for a circuit then delivered at the right time he must have a big squeak.Might think im mad but i always thought that Aintree would bring out the best in The Tother One,he looks a real monkey but he wouldnt be the first that got fired up by the whole Aintree experience.
