Re: Fishing
I have finally arranged my river fishing trip for a week saturday.
Will hopefully get a couple of photos which I can upload. Not going for anything big, just trotting a stick for grayling and wild brownies. Have had a few grayling in excess of 1lb there before though, which is a good fish, the largest being a shade under 2lb, which was an absolute belter.

Re: Fishing
Float fishing for me also Fists, just not long worked out how to plummet the depth properly so i'm feeling more confident, will be looking for Carp but have a feeling i'll have to get through the Roach first, being quite new to course fishing i'm happy to catch anything. Magiscroft has most Course fish but they are fairly small apart from the big loch, has about 7 ponds all in. Will wait and see what the weathers like first.

Re: Fishing
Sounds good gents, do enjoy a spot of course fishing for the diverse range of fish it enables you to catch. You often get a nice surprise when an unexpected fish appears.
Any tips feel free to ask, Galv, given that course fishing is very much my forte over other types.

Re: Fishing
Nice one Kenny, glad you grabbed some sunshine, i was freezing, the wind was brutal and it blew my chair into the water as soon as i started, had to stand/crouch all day my legs are killing me. Caught my biggest Roach of about 2lb, lost 4 really good ones could have been other big Roach or small Carp. Caught plenty smaller Roach but was hard going and freezing cold.

Re: Fishing
My season has started, conditions have been cold, but I managed to christen my son's new rod with him and caught a few fish at the weekend.
On the plus side the water has been pleasingly clear for this time of year, the recent rain has brought it up a little bit, and there was a bit more fly-life and a few more rising fish than recent years had lead me to expect in the period before the Mayfly starts.
On the down side the river is still very low for this time of year, I'm dreading seeing what it will look like in mid to late summer, and there's a lot of furunculosis about.

Re: Fishing
I'm going camping in two weeks time. Couple of days at Bala lake in Wales, a day in the Brecon Beacons and a couple of days in the Forest of Dean.
Very tempted to chuck a small spinning rod in to the car - might have some luck with perch, pike and trout in the Welsh lakes and rivers if I can persuade the missus to let me have the odd hour here and there.

Re: Fishing
Where you off to, Kenny?
Fishing is usually banned at marina's, which is a shame given that they are absolutely teeming with fish!
I remember once when I was about 14 years old me and my cousin took the telescopic rod out to the marina when we were in Spain. After initially being moved on by security we relocated in a spot between two boats, well hidden. We had great fun trying to tempt one of the many big mullet roaming the area to take our floating bread - they're a fussy fish, very tentative - and we finally hooked one. It put up a hell of a scrap on such light gear but eventually we managed to land it (my cousin had to lean right over the edge of the wall to reach the fish whilst I held his legs!).
By now any hopes of being discreet had flown out of the window. The splashing of the mullet and the rod arched over double had drawn a crowd of about 15 people of varying nationality. One guy asked if we were going to eat it, and then asked if he could have it to eat, to which we answered no on both counts and swiftly returned the fish, before deciding not to push our luck and leave before Pablo the security guard returned to check out the commotion.
I love random bits of fishing like that, it was great fun just to catch that one fish, we were well chuffed with ourselves.

Re: Fishing
Ha! Sounds very similar to my own harbour trip in Spain all those years ago! You have much success with the mullet? They can be a tricky fish to hook (we fished floating bread off the surface) Brilliant fun.
Yeah you're right, immense enjoyment can be gained from a couple of little fish landed. Just a great experience wandering around the lake and the little river it feeds. Nature at its best.

Re: Fishing
I managed to catch 4 in all , started off with floating bread but then spotted a local lad using feathers and he was having great fun so i tried that ...it was great with all the mullet chasing the feather about in fact not hooking anything was better then when one actually took it

Re: Fishing
I had a pike on the fly recently when dry-fly fishing for trout. I saw him in the bottom and changed from a size 16 greenwell's glory to a huge tarpon fly and steel trace - quite a difference to cast it.
The pike seized the fly on the first occasion I fished it properly past him - I thought he had let it go disinterestedly but he had slowly registered it and then darted at it once it had gone about 6' past him and I felt a really strong take and that lovely weight of an energetic 6lb fish on my dry-fly trout rod.

Re: Fishing

Re: Fishing
This is what really annoys me about these brainless cretins. Often they are taking things of much greater than monetary value. Best of luck in the search.

Thanks Fist , if i could get my Dads old stuff back that would do me . I could then have a giood excuse to buy some new gear
