Surrey Team Director Chris Adams has named a thirteen man squad for the LV=County Championship match against Somerset at the Kia Oval starting on Wednesday.

kevin pietersen having played his game for surrey this year is not included

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
The problem with that would be Batty at 7 and Lewis at 8. I personally would have gone for Spriegel at 7 and then played 4 seamers, but from that squad I'd go for Linley and Edwards to miss out.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
JimBob - thanks as always for setting up the thread.
Btw, did you notice that for the last round of CC matches, Shelsey provided links not only to local radio commentaries but also to our Surrey v Worcs discussion thread? Niice touch, Shelsey.
Anyway, I think jbd has hit the nail squarely on the head. From the squad named we seem almost compelled to play Jordan so as to avoid having too long a tail. Whilst from our last match Roy replaces Ramps which is certainly fair enough, it appears Jordan replaces Pietersen -not exactly a like for like replacement!
Dernbach and Meaker for Linley and Edwards seem logical replacements although a bit tough on the the two who both impressed at times against Worcs.
Hope to go one day this week. Corporal - you're a weather expert, views on that aspect please.
As regards Ramps, a decision I expected and the right one in my view. Adams refers to him taking a break for two weeks - that certainly also rules him out of next week's Warks CC match.

i can't see Jordan getting a place. then really difficult call between Linley and Edwards. Heart says Edwards, but head Linley.
Shame about Ramps, but entirely expected.

Can see Philander doing some damage when we bat.
Watch out for the Overton bros. too, both have had good starts to their fledgling careers.
Speaking of damage, Meaker is being carted around here.
63/0.

Certainly Somerset's morning.
I can almost understand Dernbach being ''rested'' as Churchy has emphasised. However, why include him in the squad in the first place?
Apparently, River went off for a while after he ran into umpire Jesty!

Somerset and pumping Surrey! Didn't see that coming, but in all honesty with the Somerset bowling attack I'd expect this game to peter out into a tame draw unless either Philander interferes or it starts ripping and Dockrell gets into a groove.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
I guess the message from today has to be - Be careful what you wish for!
Well, we've wanted a full day's play and plenty of runs at the Oval for ages. Just a shame all the runs went to Somerset. 441-5 at close.
Remarkably consistent returns from our five frontline bowlers:
1-78 from Lewis
0-77 from Jordan
1-86 from Meaker
0-74 from Edwards
0-85 from Batty.
Remarkably disappointing as well.
Left to our sixth bowler de Bruyn to very slightly redeem things with 2-33.
There's a members' forum at the Oval tonight. I would expect a few grenades to be lobbed in Adams' direction following this performance.
Oh well, I'm going tomorrow. Hope I get to see Le Roi
batting and carrying on as Somerset have left off ....

so good days cricket today then it seems
Alex Barrow hitting more runs!
And Kieswetter hitting 49, having a decent season so far in terms of the 4 day game so far, shame for him is Bairstow has done very well. Compton continuing his form as well.

Batted in fits and starts today. Look forward to Guildford's report on day's play. Really need Winegums and the tail to get at least another 100 which is asking a lot.
Still, Churchy thinks we are still very much in this match.....

Some very good and some very bad today, standard Surrey stuff! Good for Brain to get a few and Davies get a deserved hundred. Unfortunately Hyphen can only bat in the second innings this year for some reason and Roy's cameo was all too short. Good job we have Wine Gums to save the day again. Jordan and Edwards both went for plenty, perhaps the Viscount should have been ahead of one of them?
Hope this pitch isn't a sign of things to come as it's going to be draws all the way unless poor batting intervenes. Having said that we might need to follow on tomorrow but judging from things so far we should be able to take a draw away.

forecast reasonable for tomorrow! - as others have said, mixture of good and bad...I think we'll struggle to save follow on, but atleast we'll hopefully double our batting points for the season
.... have to hope for a Worcester style recovery second innings!!

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Really interesting day at the Oval yesterday.
Posters have already picked up well on our taking a few steps forward and then a few steps back during the day. By way of illustration:
* Lewis and Meaker's fine opening spell in which they shared 4 wickets. Meaker bowled with real pace and extracted bounce from a docile looking track. Followed by an unbeaten partnership of almost 40 from the Overton twins batting at ten and Jack. I was disappointed by Hyphen's captaincy here as I thought he should have given Edwards a bowl. A wicket - even that of an unknown tailender - would have been good for his confidence after yesterday's mauling.
* Things got worse with the immediate loss of Reindeer but seemed to improve with quick and clean hitting from Davies and Roy. The latter was then suckered out by Philander who lured him into a hook shot despite two men being back for a chance. Bizarrely, that almost saved Roy as Meschede and Jamie Overton both looked to the other to run the final few yards and take the catch. At the last moment, Meschede retreated backwards, extended his arm and clung on one handed. Roy appeared to consider himself unlucky as he slowly trudged off. However, he should have been aware of what Philander was seeking. A penny for Ramps' thoughts upon hearing that?!
* After those 2 wickets though, everything seemed to go our way. Davies cut and drove with elegance and power. He certainly deserved his century although had a bit of good fortune on the way, particularly against Dockrell. Meanwhile, Brain was playing his supporting role very effectively and there seemed few Surrey worries as tea arrived with the score on 187 - 2.
* Within twenty minutes of the resumption, the game was completely changed as Davies, Brain and Hyphen had all been snaffled by Dockrell and Philander. I don't think anyone was too surprised when River joined his colleagues back in the hutch, appearing to give a bit of easy catching practice to Philander off Trego.
* Things then improved once more as Maynard and Batty, both sensibly balancing attack and defence, took us to stumps.
Where are we now? Maynard and Batty haven't got us out jail but have at least started digging a tunnel. It will though still be very difficult for those two and the tail to score almost another 80 runs to avoid the follow on. If we do have to follow on, I don't fancy our chances. There is still a lot of time left in the game for Somerset - taking a leaf out of Surrey's book, one of the reasons they are now so well placed is that they scored their first day runs so quickly.
Also, a word about the Somerset bowlers (particularly for Hodge and JDizzle). The stand ins and support acts - Trego, Meschede, the Overtons -are clearly not as good as absent performers like Thomas and Kirby. However, they seem willing and keen. Furthermore, Somerset still have two very fine leading bowlers they can rely on. Whilst not appearing to go flat out yesterday, Philander was sharp and, bowling from very close to the stumps, regularly made the batsman play at the ball. I was also very impressed by Dockrell who deserved more than his one wicket. Subtle variations of flight and pace together with a calm temperament, being unflustered when Davies and Maynard made a conscious effort to go after him. I fear he'll do well second time round.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Thanks for that report Guildford, very interesting to read. We've been very unlucky with injuries so far this year but it is good to hear that the young kids, and Pirate Pete, and trying to grab their opportunities with the ball in both hands. The Overton twins have only just turned 18 and are very much ones for the future, so any experience they can get is great. Meschede has been in and around the first team for nearly a season now, and he is beginning to show signs of improvement with both bat and ball so hopefully he can have a superb year and really break through and establish himself.
Philander is class, and we know all about him but it is good to hear Dockrell looking tasty in the 4 day game. There were murmurings that perhaps he might struggle with the 4 day stuff to begin with as he has primarily been a T20 and ODI bowler so far, but it is great to see he has taken to it this easily.
And a question for you Guildford, or any Surrey fans, what are your views on Tom Maynard? His 4 day cricket seems to have come on leaps and bounds whilst being at Surrey, and he is still looking destructive in the shorter formats too. He is also only 23 still, any possibility of him turning himself into an international player or has he got about as good as he will get?

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
JD - Maynard has come on enormously in the last year. He balances attack and defence sensibly in all forms of the game and is one of our most consistent performers.
Ramps' lack of form has understandably grabbed the headlines. However, Rudolph, Davies (until yesterday) and de Bruyn have also all been struggling for runs this season. Without Maynard and Hamilton-Brown, we would really be struggling now.
As you say, age is still well on his side and so I certainly wouldn't rule out an international career. He's already played for England Lions in the winter in Bangladesh. Others are currently ahead of him in the pecking order but we all know things can soon change.
Most definitely one to keep watching. A good close fielder as well.

Hi JimBob - I understand your comment but starting from where we did at 11 o'clock today with 6 wickets down, that was a good effort from us and our morning. Somerset will be disappointed we got 4 batting points and they didn't get the chance to enforce the follow on. We've also used up a fair bit of time which might help in salvaging a draw.jimbobgooner wrote:388 all out a absolute disgrace not to get full batting points on that wkt and poor bowling attack

Yet another fightback as Meaker gets a second innings fivefer and Somerset end the day on 154-7, a lead of 278.
If the weather holds tomorrow and we can get those last 3 wickets quickly, we could - dare I say it - even win this. We're certainly now in the best position that we have been since the match started ....
