Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Thanks Jimbob,
Interested to see that the reports (being disseminated on other threads) that Guildfordbat and I had been selected to open the bowling in this match have proved unfounded. Despite indifferent form River Jordan has made the squad ahead of both of us. On the whole I am very relieved that sense has prevailed......
Main point of interest is that Hyphen is not in the squad, and no place for Spriegel. I guess we are probably looking at either Lewis or the Viscount missing out if we are expecting a pitch that may turn. The Brain could be the 5th bowler.
Just heard Chris Adams' interview on Surrey website. Hyphen's form not good enough at the moment to be selected.

There's an eternal optimist bit of me which somehow hopes that KP will react positively to being sent to the Naughty Step that is CC1 and that he will perform well for us and act as a great role model to our understandably mentally frazzled squad at this stage of a Season Horribilis on but mostly off the pitch.
Here's hoping...

Simon - let's hope so. A double century from KP at a strike rate of around 120 would certainly come in handy.

An even more pressing question than Surrey's team selection is: has Carrot lost one of his lions, last seen roaming round Essex?

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
I'll leave the big cat for Carrot's professional expertise.
As for the starting eleven, I can't see any sane reason for Jordan to be selected.
As certain as I can be that both Batty and Kartik will play - they figured prominently in the win against Middlesex and the Taunton wicket is likey to have been prepared with something in it for the slow bowlers. Even though Somerset's Rehman is away on international duty (good news for us!), they still have Dockrell and Waller in their squad.
That leaves the last place between Lewis and Linley as the Corporal suggested earlier. As regulars know, I'm no great fan of Lewis and believe Linley deserves another opportunity even though he was little in the Middlesex game. Won't be surprised though if Adams decides otherwise ....

BIG surprise.
Gary Wilson plays in place of Steve Davies. What's that all about?
More predictably Lewis gets the nod over Linley whilst sanity prevails and Jordan is left out ....

Churchy delicately elaborates about Davies' condition. He's got the squits.
That's the closest emoticon I can see and I don't want to look any closer!
More worryingly, Churchy is reporting solo and has warned us that he's suffering from the same condition so be prepared for breaks in commentary ....

Surrey 84-3 at lunch.
Very disappointing to lose the Baron in the penultimate over to the crafty Dockrell.
Definitely Somerset's morning although it sounds like Pietersen is in good nick ....

230-5. Two overs of this session left. Need to get to tea with only 5 down.
Pietersen will understandably get all the headlines but useful support so far from Wilson. If he had gone for a duck, we could have been looking at 220 all out ....

That's good, JimBob.
I would say that was our session even with Kathy Kirby's* double wicket maiden.
Another hour or so of Pietersen at the crease with sensible support and it'll certainly be our day. Keep going, guys.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Wilson stumped off Dockrell. I didn't hear the commentary for that - I'll be annoyed if he was down the wicket trying to wallop the ball. His job was to 'stay with Kevin' and that's what Batty* must do now.
Saj Mahmood coming back into the attack. Expect more Pietersen fireworks ....
* Batty out to Mahmood.
Don't our players read the script?! It'll be shameful to leave Pietersen high and dry ....

I suspect Kartik was making the point that he didn't think much of the decision to bat him at number eleven!
Some of the Lancs (one of his former teams) supporters I chatted to at Guildford last month said he was quite a reasonable batsman. That surprised me as I'd seen no evidence of it up to then.
Anyway, 317 all out and 3 batting points. Not too bad a position overall, I suppose. However, I'm unhappy that we've ended up being totally reliant on one player who is in reality little more than on loan to us. Other than Pietersen, four batsmen got to 20 but none of them reached 35. Add to that, most of the tail got out too quickly and failed to support the one batsman who threatened to put us well on top.
By my reckoning, 14 overs left for us to get a wicket or two. Alternatively, an opportunity for Lewis to gift them a few extras in no balls .... sorry but, as mentioned above, I'm not feeling particularly happy.

Re: surrey vs somerset match thread
Strange sort of day - all out 317 off 79 overs. Massive contrast between KP and everyone else. He is a couple of classes better than our other batsmen - but even so, as Guildford says, it's very disappointing that no one else could hang around for any time. Should be clearer after Somerset's innings whether it was KP's innings that was exceptional or whether it was just that the rest of our batting was well short of expectations.

That'll be the famous potting shed commentary box at Taunton. Must be unusual because the commentators always comment on it!

Unless something spectacular happens in Taunton or at Liverpool... its looking like we're going down to the wire at Liverpool in a couple of weeks time! Lets hope that KP still feels he has a lot to prove by being dropped by England! As others have commented... the gulf between him and the rest of our batting is substantial... lets just hope that some of our batsmen decide to join the party...there's lots of promise but no consistency....

great start by Surrey... 53 - 0.... Burns and Ansari batting well! - I was very fearful of a dodge start leaving us on the ropes...but now.. reasonably confident of atleast a draw
apparantly great controversy over a run out with a somerset batsman run out backing up, by Kartik... however consensus from the commentary box was that Kartik was fully in his rights to do so.. especially as a warning had been given by the bowler... might have to check it out on the highlights!!

Shame about yesterday being rained off. Thanks essentially to Pietersen's opening day century, we're on top. However, barring a complete Surrey batting collapse, it's hard to see this match going anywhere other than drifting off to a draw.
Good to see Meaker blow away the tail today - we need more of that. More than useful performance from Kartik as well although certainly not without controversy (flagged in 'Clarification on the Laws Please' thread on the general cricket section).
Disappointed again with Lewis. Admittedly he got us a cheap wicket on the first evening but undid any good with figures today of 0 - 76 from 13 overs. He also bowled 2 more no balls. He's now conceded over 100 runs this season just through over stepping the line. That's particularly damaging in a generally low scoring season and totally unacceptable for an experienced and presumably expensive signing.
Following on from Chichester's post, just need to hope that Worcs and Lancs don't do any better than draw tomorrow ....

What is the Surrey take on tomorrow then? Will they be making a generous declaration to leave Somerset a chase or, as I fear will happen s a Somerset fan, will they perfectly understandably be happy with a draw what with the Lancs and Worcs games seemingly destined for a draw?
Looking like another year onto the Somerset County Championship wait!

Interesting interview. Adams seemed to get a touch of verbal diarrhea. But says that he wished Batty had not pressed the run out appeal and apologises that it was against the spirit of cricket.
I think we can be fairly sure there will be no agreed declaration target set in the match tomorrow.....

.... although Adams still ''supports Gareth''.
All a bit confusing still. Whilst regretting the appeal, Adams appears to understand why it was made.
My own take is that Barrow was bl**dy stupid and shoulders a fair bit of the blame for the whole matter. According to Kartik (on twitter) and Batty (via Adams), Barrow was warned by Kartik earlier in the over; to me, the warning and the recency of it is very relevant to being within the spirit of the game. Furthermore, I get the impression that things were going on and being said out in the middle by both sides before the appeal. That should all have got Barrow thinking and back in his crease.
Another angle on this (which I think Shelsey raised on the other thread) is that Somerset could have scrambled a few quick singles as a result of the non-striker starting his run from an unfairly advanced position. That's also not something to be commended.
