Enzo Maccarinelli Suspended

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli has been given a six-month anti-doping suspension, UK Anti-Doping have confirmed.

The 31-year-old Welshman, best known for surrendering his title to David Haye in 2008, tested positive for methylhexaneamine (MHA) on March 23 following a win over Shane McPhilbin.

His ban was backdated to April 19 and will expire on October 18.

What does MHA do?

This was posted about two weeks ago, strange the BBC are only just reporting it.

Apparently he bought a dietry supplement from a boxing magazine and the substance was in that.

Wow, a one fight ban for taking banned substances. What a deterent!

Probably doing Enzo a favour in any case given how hes been faring lately.

2012 has turned in to a real annus horibilis for PED controversies. Come to think of it, it's been a fairly dire year for the sport in just about all departments.

It can't be doing anything good for the man considering he was lost at sea against McPhilbin after the first shot landed on him.

The guy that fought Audley Harrison last time around failed a drugs test aswell. Maybe these drugs arent as effective as made out......

5 Jamaican sprinters including Yohan Blake got done for taking that a bit ago and they got bans ranging from nothing to 3 months.

Not in the way these guys are taking it though. It comes in dodgy supplements with names like 'FACE SMASH*' and 'MENTAL POWER*' and acts as a stimulant. Guessing it's essentially used as a legal (not WADA compliant) replacement since ephridrine was banned in supplements like this.

It works in a similar but less potent way as amphetamines.

Don't know if you remember Solomon Wariso who got a short ban for taking something called "up your gas". You would have thought taking Face Smash would be dodgy.

I think the Jamaica one had the word 'power' in it.

You could buy this stuff in Tesco up until just a few months ago in Jack3D or Oxy Pro Elite. Like amphetamine, it can surpress apetite but not as strong. The Oxy had yohimbine in it and was a bit sickly, but the Jack3D was nice and clean. Course it was the best legal stimulant on the market. Naturally it gets banned. Thing is if used sensibly and cycled, it was great for weight loss, but I suppose kids could abuse it. A magnesium 2:1 Calcium supplement is essential though when taking stims.

It's funny because I broke this 3 weeks ago - I said it was a dieretic, probably something similar to what Chavez Jr uses... turns out I was spot on:

The point I made was that more control over the substances that you can buy from the back of a magazine/off the shelf. Instead I was given the "Boxers are in control of their own bodies" argument...

I wouldn't have banned him........

He's a good name to have for any half-decent cruiser or light heavies record!!
