I was just about to say that it must be a great wicket as we were doing well - then 4 go for 7 runs! What is wrong with Roy in the CC?

We'd probably be staring at another defeat if those 40ish overs weren't lost this morning - I can see us being back in within the first hour tomorrow! 13 wickets in 3 sessions - so we can't afford to lose more than 4 wickets in session - but this Surrey - they can lose 4 in an effin over!

Brittle performance.
Not looking good. Ponting can practise farming the strike for the tail end of this innings. When we follow on maybe he should farm the strike pretty much as soon as he comes out to bat.
Meanwhile, the headline about today's play on the official Surrey website is "Ponting stands firm at Guildford".

A more appropriate headline would be "Surrey attempt to snatch defeat from the jaws of a draw!".
Good example of determination and solidity set by Harinath but largely not followed by the others. Decision to send in Meaker as nightwatchman with almost 6 overs still left was viewed by several of us as wrong before he had faced a ball and sadly soon proved to be the case.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Big issue for Surrey is that compared to most other Division One teams they have a very weak tail. So you'd imagine the first three wickets will fall quite quickly.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Shelsey - very true. It is a particularly weak tail. Tremlett has been known to get a few runs. But if either of Dernbach or Keedy survive more than about 10 balls each that starts to look like a bit of a bonus. (In fact much the same could be said of Meaker and - when playing - the Viscount).

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Am I the only one who finds batting Ricki Ponting at 4 and not 3 rather strange?
And Meaker as night-watchman? A bit like England sending Tuffnel out... I'm not against the night-watchman on principle, but it has to be someone who has the technique to survive to the end of play. With 6 overs, and expecting the nightwatchman to farm the strike if possible, you're asking Meaker to face out 20 balls +. I'm not sure that's reasonable...

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Yes, very true.
Lewis' original selection (in place of Linley) was thought to owe something to him being the best batsman of the frontline bowlers. That had become more relevant with Surrey missing Davies (unquestionably a fine batsman) and Batty (no more than ok with the willow but infinitely superior to his replacement Keedy). What happens next? Lewis gets subbed by Dernbach (Corporal's comments about his batting are spot on) before we even bat. Football chant (sorry Shelsey!) comes to mind of "You don't know what you're doing!".

Mike - I understand from a comment on the Surrey supporters website that Ponting had dropped down to no 4 for Australia for a while before he retired and also played at no 4 for Tasmania. So that may well be his preference. Of course these are desperate times for Surrey, so maybe they should reappraise that, with our tail beginning at the Brain.

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Mike - the word is it's Ponting's preference to bat at 4 and he's calling the shots.
Completely agree with you about Meaker the nightwatchman as did several I know at the ground.
I'll respond shortly to your query about Meaker the bowler on the "Surrey News" thread. Sorry I didn't last night - post play discussions, drinks and a curry got in the way!

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Dernbach lasted 4 balls.
Keedy more impressive - unbeaten for six balls, though we are still waiting for him to score his first cc run for us. Fine effort from Tremlett to last 15 balls.
IF we go into the last hour with Surrey with loads of wickets in hand I think Warks shouldn't give up hope of a win until they need to take more than 1 wicket per ball...

Half century for Burns as he suddenly hits a couple of boundaries in one Javid over.
Solanki digging in with 14 off 61 balls so far. Warks turn back to pace, with Rankin.

Meanwhile, the sound effects on Churchy's commentary are quite impressive - with a howling gale blowing at the top of the open stand where Churchy is no doubt crouching.

Surrey second innings lasted 70 overs so far. So I suppose there may be another 20 or so to go. If Warks need that many....

Re: surrey vs warwickshire county championship
Warwickshire are probably only 1 wicket away from winning this, only Roy, batting average of 8, and the four zeroes to come!
Luckily Wilson is managing to dig in a bit this time around!

Partnership lasted 11 overs so far. 78 overs gone in 2nd innings. Probably a 50/50 chance of saving the match if they carry on for another four or five overs.

Good effort from most of the batsmen today, including Burns earlier and Ponting and Wilson this afternoon. Doesn't alter the big problems we've got, in that we were well outplayed in the match from first to last.

How Warks must wish they could have tagged those 37 overs lost yesterday onto the end of today.
It needs to be remembered that the points for a draw are less than 20 per cent of those for a win. If we don't win a few, we will be relegated. Tonight a win looks a long way away.
