US Open Day 10
Djokovic vs Murray the highlight match, I indeed thought of opening a separate thread for this match but then given the fans interest of late all as one thread would do.
Before starting the line up, I have a question thou, the crowd turnout is too little for today's match between Federer and Batista, Federer generally enjoys massive support and is a big crowd puller , he playing a 4th round night match after the long weekend day yet half the stadium was void. I also noted this behavior for several other matches, is that coz no Rafa in this tournament?
Jokes apart, this should be a big concern for USO authorities, have the hiked the prices so much? to what ever I saw the tickets were still cheaper than Toronto masters for the same round.
The trend is more or less similar in our forums too, we have had so many exciting matches yet the fans turnout and arguments has been way too little.
Back to Matches now.
1]Azarenka vs Makarova
[Azarenka's golden run might come to an end tomorrow, Makarova in awesome form and the way she dismissed Genie was superb]
2]Stan vs Kei
[Stan should start favourite given the late night long match of Kei with Raonic, but neither did Stan had it easy vs Robredo]
3]Serena vs Panetta
[One thing for sure it won't be a cake walk, Penetta could trouble Serena if the champ don't bring her A-game]
4]Nole vs Murray
[The Highlight Match, Nole starts the heavy fav but I have a feeling Murray will trump this]
We also have some good doubles action.

Re: US Open Day 10
I am obviously hoping Andy can win tonight but can't see it after the 2014 he has had. I would be happy enough with anything that isn't a tame surrender like we saw V Dmitry at Wimbledon and V Nadal at RG. Going down fighting in four or five sets would demonstrate to he is getting back on track. Novak to win in four sets.
The other quarter is another interesting one but Kei is in a similar position to Andy as in devoid of great form of late and with injury problems so to expect him to win especially after a five set marathon the other night may be asking a bit too much. Besides Stan seems to like this surface. Stan to win in four sets.

Re: US Open Day 10
If it's anything like their previous USO match, I can catch the last set when I wake up on Thursday!
The objective part of my brain makes Novak a relatively clear favourite.
Experience tells me though, that:
1) This is Novak
2) This is Andy
so pretty much anything could happen! Both capable of brilliance, both capable of imploding. Could be a 5 set bloodbath, could be straight sets to either player.

Amusing that despite Andy's poor year he is one of only two players (male or female) to make the QF of every slam.
Novak should win tonight but Andy showed enough against Tsonga to suggest he may push him. Like Craig, I would be happy with Andy pushing Novak in 4 or 5. That will set him up well for the rest of the year.

Sleep for 9.30pm ans set alarm at 2am simples. Murray's strong defensive skills will enable him to grab atleast a set. He's better letting Novak attack him and force the play rather than attacking himself.
This stat could be vital:
Murray has spent 10hrs 4mins on court, while Djokovic has played for 6hrs 33mins.
The rest of the stats don't matter much

Re: US Open Day 10
@iC... I watched Wozniacki v Errani, the crowd was much smaller. Typically the day after Labour Day weekend does not have as big a crowd as Fri-Mon attendance numbers.
The Granollers match was rain-interrupted, which is unrelated to the attendance figures.
Prices for tickets have gone up steadily (even if not astronomically). I will try an find specific day numbers.
Nadal's absence is a big hit as well. The arguments (leading to GOAT and sundry topics) are limited to HE's forays in that territory.

Two interesting matches, I see both matches having a bloody bath to 5 sets and somehow the underdogs pull it off.
Is there no support for Kei?
kei to win in 5 tough sets.
Andy Nole encounter I want it to go Andy way, so I don't care who would win but the support is for Andy.

Cilic is winning this tournament , no back off, he should have won Wimbledon too, but for some reason went for sleep after 3rd set against Nole [when he was completely dominant and leading 2 sets to 1]but it won't happen this tournament.

The big question in my mind is "is it windy?".
If it's like it was for Federer / Bastardo last night then Murray has a great chance. He's also playing more like the Murray of old, mixing things up, playing "difficult" which I think helps him (i) because it's a better way, and (ii) because it's even better suited to dodgy conditions.

Don't think he went to sleep in that one Direct, he was going for power and missing.
I think the score of the last 2 sets was quite misleading. Not sure how Cilic comes back from a 5 setter, his 5 setters are usually quick!

iii) It's the style of play that Djokovic is most vulnerable to.bogbrush wrote:The big question in my mind is "is it windy?".

Re: US Open Day 10
As always between these two, it will be who executes slightly better on the night. On that basis, you have to say Novak should take it as he has excited better than Murray all season in the big matches. And Murray is far more likely to not play well based on this years evidence.
The seed of doubt in my mind is this... Murray's performance v Tsonga was by far the best he's played since last years Wimbledon final. By far. In terms of tactics, aggression, focus, anger...
If that Andy turns up, it could be fun.

Yeah, I thought the Tsonga win was one of his best ever slam performances. If he can play at that sort of level then he has a shot - he goes favourite if its windy. The worry is that each of his slam losses this season have been curious no-shows with no relation to how he had played up to that point.

Re: US Open Day 10
Nishikori - with his lack of match fitness from disruption of play due to injury - don't see him hurting Wawrinka, unless Stan plays like a dog. Maybe a tough first set, or Kei ekes out a 2nd set, but it's Wawrinka's match to lose.
Serena - same as above, just don't think Pennetta puts Serena "off" enough for anything more than a hard first set, but could be a blowout for Serena.
Andy v Novak - this is the "mouth-watering" match possibly. Agree very much with HM Murdoch - could be a tug fest with either winning, or a straight setter for either. On balance of probability, think Novak in 4 with Murray taking either 1st or 2nd set. If Novak goes up 2 sets to none, ball game over. Hope it's a humdinger though - would ignite the tournament in absence of Nadal. Federer creating a stir with his super play and the thought of his winning a 6th US Open, which, a year ago, didn't seem like it could possibly be so. His "cutting off" of angles as he comes to net, has been great to see but it hasn't been Novak sending those groundies at him, at the net, so feel we need to see what happens when he plays Monfils, Berdych and then probably Djokovic.
Azarenka v Makarova on serve after 3 games - again, this could go either way but suspect Vikka's got her "eye in" at this point, we'll see...

Re: US Open Day 10
I fancy Murray to pick up 1 of the final 2 Masters of the season. After the USO, this is his chance to surge up the rankings and back into the top 4 by the end of the year. If not, he'll be in prime position for Australia when Stan will not defend his title. Still, it would be nice to see him pick up a title on the final day of this tournament...

It was altogether a different cilic from Start of set 4, he didn't play like the guy who hard fought won the 3rd set, there was no movement, no big shot attempts, no killer serves, all in all from the start of 4th he completely gave up, should be either match fixing or he had no gas left out, that match is a bit suspicious to me.

Not Two times two time Champion...Two time... Two time champion... The second "two time" is for effect. Long as he doesn't get dragged into a war with Murray/Djokovic, I think An All-Swiss final would be most intriguing.

Re: US Open Day 10
Once the match got to five sets, it figured that Raonic was more likely to provide opposition to Wawrinka than Kei. Kei has fitness issues which I don't think have completely been visited, and it was always on the cards that he just pitches up flat. I don't really know about Raonic's stamina, but he has a big serve and Stan isn't always the best returner, so his first shot woulda kept him in it for longer
