I think the decision is pretty much guaranteed already. There's no way they are going to admit a mistake was made in terms of the punishment. The SRU needed to appeal, but it's really just a tick box exercise.
Sorry for this bleak pessimistic view, but I have no faith that the right call will be made here.

Agreed, there is no way that they will admit to an error.
I think that under the current laws he is guilty and as such the ban is correct - unfortunately it is the laws that are a bit outdated, and an appeal isn't really the place for such things to be discussed.

More importantly: who has Hornee Furra been training with this week? If he's filling in for Dancer then Glasgow will be travelling to Munster with a third choice 10 which is not great. If he's been with Glasgow all week then Tonks will be at 10 for Scotland, which given that he didn't get on at all in the first two matches does not fill me with confidence.

Hard to tell who will play 10.
On the one hand, Tonks has played more at 10 and has been (IMO) a bit more convincing. He's good under the high-ball which could be a handy asset.
Given that it'll probably be an all Glasgow backline, Horne might be quite useful to have if you are forced to field an inexperienced 10. He'll know the Glasgow calls and will be familiar with their play style.
Horne playing vs Ospreys might just be to give him gametime so he's game fit.

Really? What about Laidlaw, Tonks and Visser? Will Scott not make the bench? What about S-HC or Cusiter?

Touchy, Fes, touchy.
I think Nema meant outside 10. On current form Scott might just make the bench. Visser should be dropped and ...well that's the options really.

I'd say the opposite, bench Visser as he's not done anything wrong/right and drop Scott as he's totally out of form and missed the key tackle vs Wales.

Nakarawa banned for 3 weeks
Think he can teach Kellock to offload like him between now and the munster game?

That is not good for Glasgow, probably the worst player we could have lost at this time and it could tip the difference, especially in the two Irish games.
At least he will be fresh for the end of the season!

Rob Baxter talking up Moray Low
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/rugby-union/31627637
Have not seen a lot of him since he went down to the Chiefs, good to hear he is doing ok and improving. He was always a bit of an unfulfilled talent whilst at Glasgow. Maybe the move has done him good, it often does!

Unfortunate to lose Nakarawa although he should be fresher. If Gilchrist gets back from injury soon (anyone have any update - it's taking forever!) then maybe Edinburgh could loan Mckenzie again?
Kinda puzzles me though that the hearing for Russell was at Gatwick airport and this a Dublin hotel. Why not in Scotland?

Not clear. In the same way that it's not clear why a man from Limerick was in charge of an all-Irish disciplinary panel who banned a Glasgow lock for matches against Munster and Leinster. I mean, who can really say?

Gilchrist does seem to be taking a while to heal up. He was down on the pitch on Friday carrying the bottles, Surely he can't be to far away. He needs to get back on the pitch to have any chance of making the WC squad and that would allow Edinburgh to free up McKenzie again.

Yes the whole system stinks to high heaven. Like Alasdair Reid's piece in The Herald recently, we should now demand to know why there are so many Irish Grade 1 referees - nothing to do with the WR erseholes having their gaff in Dublin I suppose ? !

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread VI - Banter Boogaloo
Sorry, there is some danger of the conspiracy theories running wild here. It is always be going to be cheaper to take the player to the adjudicators than the adjudicators to the players. if we accept that there is a need for disciplinary action in the game, then we have to accept the results of the findings. I have seen the footage of the Naka event and in all honesty, he was lucky not to have got sent off at the time, if there had been a better play back available to the officials, then he probably would have been sent off and may have caused Glasgow to have lost the game as well. It was silly and unnecessary and I hope he learns his lesson!
The Finn Russell situation is somewhat different in that it is the laws of the game that are possibly wrong and need clarifying. By the precedent of recent events, his ban was consistent with current practice, he could easily have been sent off as well. Whether that is right for the game is a somewhat different debate and hopefully one that will be had now.

Grant Gilchrist has been ruled out for the rest of the season, requiring further surgery on his arm.
Apparently he is part of a small % of people that have a 'delayed healing response'.
Big blow for him personally, but Edinburgh and Scotland should hopefully cope OK in his absence given our strength in depth at lock.

That's tough on Grant Gilchrist and will no doubt roger his WC ambitions. It did seem odd that it was taking so long to get him back, I guess this explains it.

Apparently in light of Kevin Locke's possible move to union, Scottish Rugby League are actively looking to recruit SQ Australian fullback Lachlan Coote for the Four Nations tournament next year.
This video of his 'defensive prowess' is worth a look, especially as he then goes on to create a try from it with a fantastic pass to the winger. Not sure he would stay on the field long in Union with his tackling technique mind...

Unless Swinson or Hamilton has a storming 6N I don't think it should affect his world cup chances too much - I still think he's our third best lock and of he gets himself fit and involved in the warm up games that should be enough.
Not ideal obviously, but I'd still take him over those two!

Also worth remembering that all the players will have a decent holiday before world cup pre-season begins, so they will all be at the same level on terms of match fitness and form.
He's also been involved with Scotland under Cotter - thought highly enough of to be captain - so I would be very surprised if he didn't make the squad.

I think if Toolis gets picked and plays this weekend, he may well be our third choice lock by then, this is his chance and he may well take it.
All things being equal he should have been in the squad, but it is likely the lack of fitness and game time will count against him.

There won't be much holiday for them this summer, they will need to be match fit by the beginning of August, a couple of weeks off at the end of the season then straight back to it.

You know what I mean - none of the players will be match sharp given it will be at least 3 months since their last game.
Toolis might become 3rd choice, but you need 4 locks in a squad!
Would you take swinson or hamilton over Gilchrist if he does the full pre season and takes part in the warm ups?
I wouldn't.

I'd take the Grays and Toolis (providing he gets a few caps) but I'm not too sure about who else.
Given we're going to be playing two highly physical sides I think we want a bit of bulk, so I'd be a bit nervy of taking Swinson.

Some interesting choices in the Scotland team for the weekend. Can only imagine there is no other 8 to choose from. Think we might struggle without Russel and Gray.

Grayx2, Gilchrist and Toolis. That would be my 4 locks for the World Cup. Hugely exciting quartet as well, and all with plenty more time to develop further.

Agreed that would be my 4 locks for the world cup, good thing is they are all a few years from their peak so are going to get better(hopefully).

Toolis might become 3rd choice, but you need 4 locks in a squad!
Would you take swinson or hamilton over Gilchrist if he does the full pre season and takes part in the warm ups?
I wouldn't.
Grayx2, Gilchrist and Toolis. That would be my 4 locks for the World Cup. Hugely exciting quartet as well, and all with plenty more time to develop further.

That is an exciting group to pick from. Athletic, skillful and all big enough to make an impact at rucks/ball carrying. The only thing I would say is that they all seem a bit 'nice', I'm not advocating the Jim Hamilton patented 'yellow card hard-man routine', but I would like to see a bit more channeled aggression. See Brodie Retallick clattering into contact at full tilt as to what i'm trying to get at.

I know what you mean about being 'too nice' but I don't think Hamilton is of that calibre. If I was the opposing team seeing Hamilton, I wouldn't be thinking along the lines of Etzebeth - someone who can carry and tackle well - I'd be thinking penalties and yellow cards here we come!

Rumors on the Edinburgh forum, that Roddy Grant (out of contract soon) is planning on calling it a day and heading to back to South Africa.
Would be a real shame if this turns out to be true.

I know what you mean, but I certainly wouldn't class Jonny Gray or Ben Toolis as "nice" - both of them throw their weight around pretty freely. Gilchrist I have accused at times of being a little bit passive, but last season and the start of this he was making some fairly hefty tackles.
The Jim Hamilton/Bakkies Botha generation of lock is on the wane. Shoulder charges, off the ball punches and stamping are departing the game, and whilst physical intimidation will also be a large component of forward play, all four of the options listed above are enormous specimens. Of the four Richie is probably the least likely to go crashing into a ruck, shoulder first, but again I wouldn't say he lacks physicality. Some of his tackling and ball carrying is a force of nature.

Well that was a bleak weekend, the likes of which we haven't had for a while.
Scotland 19 - Italy 22
Desperate defeat to Italy, surely confining us to the wooden spoon, just as there were hopes that we were finally improving.
Munster 22 - Glasgow 10
A much depleted Glasgow were knocked off top spot after Munster got a bonus point win.
Blues 21 - Edinburgh 15
Edinburgh lose to a struggling Blues side with significant behind the scenes disruption. Bad mistakes, poor defence and yet again poor kicking let us down. 6th place is surely gone, 8 points off Connacht now.
Happy Monday!

True, but that was a foregone conclusion. It was a real positive that we actually scored some points - a try even!

The U20's won well though, first time we have won 2 games in a season for a long time. Maybe there is some hope for the future!
