Apparently, according to Wiki, it is an "English/Scottish" name. They have a tartan so I'm told.

Loads of Simpsons in Scotland, my Grandmother was one and her family had been in the North East for generations.

wiki is full of fibs!

Simpson is an English name and only came to Scotland in the 1400s.

The give away is any name with "son" at the end is not Scottish as it would be "Mac" instead!

Even "Donaldson" you would think would be Scottish but that would be MacDonald!

MacSim would be Scottish!

MacSim could never be a Scottish surname : it sounds to much like a computer game. Not so much the highland glen as Silicon Valley.

I know some people want to raise the 3yr qualification rule but over 600 is probably pushing it....

Time for some banterusmaximus

Pick your Scottish pro dream team! Pick any players currently playing for Edinburgh and Glasgow or on books at either team. Starting XV and a bench

There's a catch though! Each poster can only pick one player for the team so choose wisely!

What are the rules here - is it first come first served?

So if someone said

12 - Andries Strauss

He'd be in the team??

He would, but you've already picked so boxing

Once the squad has been chosen we get to argue about who has picked who and then discuss the lack of Players from Ayr

12 / 13 Peter Horne. The most elusive runner we have right now and in real good form. Sorry but on current form he edges out Bennett. maybe supersub covering everything from 10 - 15

Regardless of form, we need some Edinburgh forwards in this pack otherwise it'll blow over in the wind.

He's always 12 or 10.

Better make it Russell then, no one has had him yet (surprisingly)

My bad, the brain is still on eastern time. Might consider Richie Vernon for a glorious return to the back row...

Probably, and I was joking about Coman before anyone says anything!

I personally think that

6 Du Preez
7 Hardie
8 Strauss

Would be a hell of an uncompromising back row. Du Preez would have to get away from his recent Denton-eque hanging out on the wing though.

I tend to agree, but it was that destructiveness in the wide channels that caused Glasgow so many problems in the 1872 - If or when Du Preez gets called up for Scotland, I'll feel like Prince David talking to Eric Liddell in Chariots of Fire: "Nice to have you on the same side at last."

Edinburgh and Glasgow: 'Ghost' Players

Is it just me or does Edinburgh have an unusually large numbers of players who are signed (had a contract this season) never to be seen again, be that through injury or just not being selected?

At Glasgow players like Hugh Blake, Will Bordill and Kieran Low fall into this category. Decent enough players that just don't get opportunities (particularly Bordill).

The problem is more at Edinburgh in comparison. This season we have seen hardly anything from: Sam Beard, Dougie Fife, Otulea Katoa, Nick McLennan, Andries Strauss, Jade Te Who?, Simon Berghan, Allan Dell, Grant Shiells, George Turner, Chris Auld

Matt '1 Royal Infirmary Lane' Scott, Nasi Manu

I know some are unfortunate injuries, see above, but the list of players who have had next to no gametime this season yet are still fit and on a contract is much, much larger for Edinburgh.

Take Dougie Fife. Rate him or not, he's at least a half decent internationally capped winger who, on his day, is an asset to the Edinburgh XV. Now, what Edinburgh lack is a 10, right? So why is he off playing 7s when he could allow FB Tom Brown to play at full back, allowing 10 Kinghorn to play and get experience at 10? This would also get Burleigh to 12 which is needed.

Another example, Allan Dell, George Turner and Simon Berghan. That's Edinburgh's 3rd choice FR but would have had Zebre's moving backwards and been decent in the loose, giving DFN a needed rest.

And take Nick McLennan. He can play at 10 - so why is he not having a shot?

I rate Solomons and I think he will leave a very good legacy at Edinburgh - he built from the ground up Edinburgh's pack and has developed the first and second choice front row for the next few years for Scotland, not to mention the likes of SHC, Toolis, CDP. But why are his assistant coaches/Scott Johnson... not currently or previously been telling him to play the players aforementioned? Or at least allowing him to?

I have went for a controversial choice, but Mcinally has really impressed me in the loose and would suit playing in an expansive team.

I agree with a nematode a few years ago edinburgh had almost 30 forwards, interesting to see the sevens squads for gala 7s. A lot of random club players involved and it would be handy if we narrowed our squad and spent more on high profile players

Nematode - excellent thread. You could make a great "Ghost" XV from the two Pro squads over the years:

1.Sheills 2.Titterell 3.Firth 4.Low 5.Kellock(c) 6.Basilia 7.Bordill 8.Manu 9.Leck 10.Te Rure 11.Katoa 12.Grigg 13.Auld 14.Penn 15.McLennan

Fes, I think the Pukekohe Kid (Firth) came on against Treviso at the weekend. He is not a ghost yet; Toonie is giving him the long acclimatisation that he usually gives to new front-rowers. Either that or the Tombola treats him with the same disdain as the Lottery treats me.

As for Cap'n Kellock he is no ghost even if the Munstermen (and POC in particular) have recurring nightmares about the supernatural way Big Al murdered their hopes of getting back into the final when he hovered six feet off the ground to win THAT lineout.

I selected Kellock because even ghosts need leadership.

Quite a few disappearing acts in the lock department actually: Campbell, MacAlpine, Gilchrist, MacKenzie and Van Der Westhuizen to name but a few.

I ain't afraid of no ghost.

Isn't Chris Pennell the Worcester fullback? Useful player.

For this season?

Kieran Low is half and half as he got loaned out near the start of the season (not that he was playing beforehand). Tommy Spinks is at Jersey so swap him with Blake. Sam Beard has played 8 pro12 games this season and stayed on for longer than 55 minutes in each so not too bad. Think Helu has played less or Fraser Lyle for Glasgow. Nikki Walker was player-coach at Hawick during the 2014-2015 season so Junior B would be a better shout. Chris Penell is at Worcester, were you thinking McClennan or maybe Cuthbert?

Helu has been a disappointment for Edinburgh. He doesn't meet the quality threshold for an NSQ player and should be moved on. Brown, Fife and Hoyland are all better players.

Not necessarily just this season. I completely forgot about Hugh Blake so he should take Spinks' place. As for Nikki Walker, he was on a contract but hardly played - I wasn't sure if Junior was on a pro deal, if so, he should be in there.

Centre is a tricky position, Strauss aside. Lyle has played for Glasgow (and I think scored) a bit and been fairly important for them. But for me Beard is a better 'ghost' candidate because he is good enough to be starting week in, week out, but hasn't been involved much. Either or to be fair.

Chris Pennell Doh I meant Mike Penn

Surely Hoyland would be in? I think in another 3-4 years, he could be a cracking wee player.
