Ultimately Townsend needs to carry the can for this. In our two biggest games the game plan was completely off. It was exactly the same plan that failed against England and then exactly the same strategy that got us back into it. Funnily enough it’s remarkably similar to how we played under Cotter.

We simply didn’t turn up for 40 mins. You can’t win games if you drop out of the match for such long periods of time

What a game. Second half felt like it last 80 minutes on its own. Must have been one hell of a half time team talk for that fight back.

Wonderful attacking rugby from both sides. Just too many error from Scotland.

So delighted for Japan, as much as I didn’t want us to go out. They totally deserve it, they’ve been brilliant, total respect!

They put masses of faith in Taylor coming good, and he didn't. Not enough rugby under his belt, or possibly overrated.

Most intense World Cup match I can remember right now. Well done Japan! Commiserations Scotland - brave fightback but that 1st half from the brave blossoms was awesome.

Commiserations to Scottish fans. Team fought hard and man for man perhaps better than Japan, but the hosts are better coached and prepared.

They will be tired in the quarters after that game which is why the games must be played for all teams. Great game.

We played a much more patient game under VC. We would run more than 3 phases before trying a miracle pass or kick. There's going to be a lot of soul searching post WC. Interested to see if toonie wull jump pretty soon after this.

Well done Japan, no complaints about that result, the better side one.

Good to see us make a fight of it in the end, but left ourselves way to much to do before we decided to start playing.

Its been the story of Toonie's reign unfortunately and big questions now about his future.

A few other stalwarts will have played their last games as well and in truth it looked a competition to far for some of them anyway. There is a decent Scotland side in there somewhere, but we have not found it yet!

Thought the ref handled that match very well. Deserves huge credit.
There should be no complaints from anyone after such an epic contest.

I'm actually more happy for Japan than sad for us. They deserve all the credit that's gone their way. They play in a way Scotland should aspire to.

We could. You just can't write off the Japanese and they of course did it 4 years ago. But SA are so powerful.

Lots of effort by Scotland but wasted. They might as well not have bothered playing in the end.

Japan about 6/1 or 13/2 to beat the South Africans in 80 minutes. I do make the Japanese outsiders, but maybe not quite that far outside!
