U20 Six Nations 2021
Thought it might good to have a place to discuss the tournament collectively, would be good to hear about players who we are less familiar with from other nations.
The games are being broadcast live on the iPlayer in the UK this weekend.

Re: U20 Six Nations 2021
These are usually entertaining games.
Fir ireland Doak, Moxham (both Ulster), Osborne (Leinster) and Kendellen (Munster) have played in the pro14 although very very little.
Backs are supposed to be good this year but forwards not so much.

Re: U20 Six Nations 2021
From patchy understanding of the Scotland u20s
In the forwards, Patrick Harrison (hk) and Muncaster (no. 8) both got gametime under Cockerill in the Rainbow Cup and did well. Harri Morris (flanker) came off the bench for a game as well. Otherwise, can't think of any others with professional experience.
Williamson and Samuel (locks) both trained with Scotland and have big things expected of them.
In the backs, Redpath (SH) and Townsend (FH) are the famous names though not sure much should be expected for either player yet. A relatively big name is Ollie Melville (wing/FB), a capture from Sale and England u18s.
In terms of professional experience, Harry Paterson (FB) got an appearance for Edinburgh in the Rainbow Cup and, considering Edinburgh's relative lack of back 3 players signed for next season, may be considered for a step up next season.

Looking at the French list there is of course yet another Ntamack. Also noticed a Joshua Brennan. I assume he's the son of Trevor.

I've no idea. Not sure what the reason for the expanded bench is, but assume they can all come on.

11 on the bench, 8 subs allowed. That's because of the condensed nature of the competition.

Has anyone got access to the 6N u20 game, Scotland v Ireland?
I thought that I had read somewhere that the games were going to be on iPlayer. Can't find it.
Will it be on later, or is it only some and not all of the games being shown live.
I've checked iPlayer and itv hub. No joy?

Thank you.
I thought that I was having a senior moment.
I don't do fb.
So I will see if I can get it on YouTube later.
At least the Wales v Italy is advertised for 8pm tonight

The French team:
Alexandre Tchaptchet, Enzo Reybier, Alfred Parisien, Léo Barré, Nelson Epee, Thibault Debaes, Théo Idjellidaine; Daniel Bibi Biziwu, Connor Sa, Paul Mallez, Joshua Brennan, Adrien Warion, Killian Tixeront, Matthias Haddad, Théo Ntamack
Replacements: Maxime Bordenave, Victor Montgaillard, Henzo Kiteau, Pierre Bochaton, Jean-Baptiste Lachaise, Téo Baudonne, Ugo Seguela, Romain Riguet, Emilien Gailleton, Matteo Garcia, Akato Fakatika
I kept looking for Ntmack in the standoff/ centres, didn't realise he was a no.8!

Re: U20 Six Nations 2021
The match reports that we had a yellow towards the end of the first half and a red at the start of the second.
Must have made it a tough afternoon for the youngsters.

Re: U20 Six Nations 2021
It was a very competitive game until the cards, in fact Scotland probably had the better of the first half.
Starting the second half down 2 players was tough though and Ireland were clinical with their chances. After that it was all about heroic Scottish defence to prevent a cricket score.
Munchester was the standout for Scotland, who was very powerful on every carry. He made roadkill of Humphries with one of them, who had to go off concussed.
An enjoyable game, but both sides looked very rusty with their lack of games played this year.

Yup I'd agree with all that.

Very scrappy game so far.
France have been decent in the first half, but England have been woeful. They haven't supported their runners, so have been turned over more times than I care to remember.
French left wing looks a special player.

Yeah, what a strange day in rugby terms, teams can only play for one half!

There are some very handy England players and they have sorted themselves out. France have just collapsed

What a second half from an English point of view! I was worried that we were going to get overpowered, but they came out after the break and everything clicked. From a Newcastle point of view Brantingham looks a very special player, the front row replacements made a huge difference.
I don't want to jinx it, but van Pootvliet looks a very special player, he is just so composed. The last time I was this excited about an English U20s scrum half was Youngs (I feel old saying that!), but he was noticeable because he made eye catching breaks, van Poorfliet looks a much more rounded talent. THat box kick into the corner was the perfect decision at the right time and was executed so well.

Also thought both Orlando Bailey and the 11, Relton? looked very good, and Fin Smith kicked everything.

I'm overly cautious about outside backs at this level, so many have made their names by running in a straight line quickly.
Bailey is a player I've had my eye on for a while, I really want him to have a crack at inside centre, rather than 10, he has all the skills and size to be very good there.

Looks tall but lightweight. What I think is very promising is that he's the kind of player who always looks like he has time when he's got the ball.

Aye, but he'll naturally put on a stone or two, he's got the frame to take it. I could see him being the same size as Devoto, I suppose it all hangs on whether he can keep his agility.

It was a really good performance from England against a good French team. They blew France away in that second half. Some real quality at 9,10 and 15. Relton on the left wing is comically quick. Replacement front row really made a difference too.

Re: U20 Six Nations 2021
Not a great ref in the Italy vs Wales match, he was on a yellow card spree - most were unnecessary and two were just the wrong decision. That and the rain lead to scrappy affair. Wales pulled through due to their superior halfbacks. Both teams look strong up front. That's good for Wales - last year we seemed to have a small front 5 lacking in power, plus we've struggled to develop locks in recent years but that could be about to change. Ben Carter, Ioan Lloyd and LRZ still eligible but are elsewhere. Our replacement props were surprisingly not as good as the Italian ones. The Azzuri are definitely not whipping boys this year.

Also it appears that 4 of our guys are with Exeter. Ollie Burrows, Dafydd Jenkins, Christ Tshiunza and Daniel John. This is a great environment for them to flourish in. I am surprised John was picked up, he may become good who knows. We aren't short of wingers with the pace required for international rugby though.

I was impressed with the Wales U20 scrum half. His passing was very fast and accurate - so much so that the centres were out of sync at times - they need to up the pace. I can't remember when I last seen an U20s scrum-half like that, even Hardy, etc weren't as good at passing at his age. Williams was plucked from England at age 16 and qualifies via his Welsh father. England academy systems again providing help where we are lacking.

Are you saying Exeter isnt a great place for youngsters to flourish or get their chances?

Scarlets have given him a five year contract such is their belief in him.

Did Brantingham play well? He has a massive reputation coming through. The England under age group management have said hes one of the best LH's they seen in a long time.
So it'll be interesting to see if he can make it through to the falcons 1st team on onwards.

I think the opposite is being said.

Wasn't the best game to watch but then again the vast majority of the players have played little rugby in the last few months & that showed with a bit of rustiness. Take the win & move on.

He did very well. He came on early-ish in the second half as part of a complete front row change, he was immediately noticeable around the pitch. Very strong and dynamic, particularly in the ruck. He gained comparisons with Mako at one point. The signs are good for him moving into the first team, but he's still a baby in propping terms.

Yeah i dont think he'll get much 1st team games this season. We also have the other young lad, LH Conrad Cade who has had very good reviews playing for Doncaster on loan this season.

Yes. The replacement England front row were pretty big lads and threw their weight around well. France's threat at the scrum disappeared with their scary looking tighthead who I presume will be a feature at senior level soon. He went off injured during the first half.
England's bench was far stronger than the French one and the French could not maintain their intensity with which they started the game. The English halfbacks were much better at controlling the game which stopped the rampant French scoring even more in the first half and strangled the French out the game in the second.

Good coaching and leadership not to let heads drop looking at the scoreboard at half time.
France did have some unfortunate injuries (Brennan included) but they really lost their way when England starting exerting serious pressure

JVP and Quirke, Atkinson and Smith. Talk about quality starting and on the bench at halfback.
Interesting to see they've gone for the beefy bench front row of last week to start this week. They certainly made an impact last week though that looked pre planned as they all took to the field not long after half time. Be interesting to see if they still tear it up from the start.
Ilione is a bit of a monster bust has had exams and injury so hasn't managed to play on loan with Notts. Looked powerful and athletic off the bench last weekend. With the work horse Clement that's a good combination.

Speaking of powerful and athletic. I see they've got Haffar on the bench. He's a bit of a freak on that front.

The team for Ireland:
Wales Under-20s: Jacob Beetham (Cardiff); Dan John (Exeter Chiefs), Ioan Evans (Pontypridd), Joe Hawkins (Ospreys), Carrick McDonough (Dragons); Sam Costelow (Scarlets), Harri Williams (Scarlets); Garyn Phillips (Ospreys), Efan Daniel (Cardiff), Nathan Evans (Cardiff), Joe Peard (Dragons), Dafydd Jenkins (Exeter Chiefs), Alex Mann (Cardiff, capt), Harri Deaves (Ospreys), Carwyn Tuipulotu (Scarlets).
Replacements: Oliver Burrows (Exeter Chiefs), Theo Bevacqua (Cardiff), Lewys Jones (Nevers), James Fender (Ospreys), Ethan Lloyd (Cardiff Blues), Christ Tshiunza (Exeter Chiefs), Will Reed (Dragons), Tom Florence (Ospreys) Morgan Richards (Dragons/Pontypridd), Eddie James (Scarlets), Rhys Thomas (Ospreys).
Big strong pack, I haven't been impressed with the attack though.
