Does Colour still matter ??

First topic message reminder :

I grew up in the early 80's where we had the limited but explosive Gerry Cooney making millions out of being a White Heavyweight. Obviously his Irish heritage helped him too.....Harry Arroyo used to get lot's of ink even though he had the poor-at-the-time IBF light strap....His successor the black Jimmy Paul was INVISIBLE!!

How far have we moved on since then???............Does Colour still matter?? Does a good white fighter have more marketing potential than a good black one??? If it does ... Is it the case that there are more quality BLACK fighters... so that is what makes a WHITE fighter have more appeal. Or is it more basic???

It is true, white men are more educated and possess more skills than any other group. That is the reason for positive discrimination. Bit like giving a fat kid a head start in a race.

It does happen, just because ts not as often doesnt make it any less wrong. Karachi now is particularly dangerous for the white man but before the war, they were just accepted as neighbours. The had no choice as their families had settled there for a century.

There is a difference between an aggressive personal attack based on race and the type of institutionalised racism where the whole of society is set up to marginalise you, give you less opportunities, and generally treat you like a 2nd class citizen. Institutional racism is prevelant in all countries. If a white man wanted to become a police officer in Thailand I am sure that he would be bottom of the list due to him being white and not asian. I believe institutional racism exists in all countries and all races benefit/ not benefit. If we were having this discussion in Saudi Arabia I very much doubt you would be saying that as a white man you are at an advantage because you are institutionally favoured due to the colour of your skin. Instead you would be saying that as a white man you are institutionally blocked from achieving your aims etc.

Why is that? Anyone know. Perhaps because white people have always been innovators and look to make life easier. Not satisfied with the spear, we invented new weapons and thus had no need for fast twitch muscles, whereas other races were happy with what they had?

Then you have swimming and cycling where both sports are monopolised almost by white athletes, Gregory Bauge is the only world class black cyclist I can think of.

Is the dominance is cycling not down to the fact that it is largely a euro sport which consists mostly of white people. Even at my club we have only white people.

I wasn't paid for. Dad worked his jobbies off to become a teacher. mother was a bit liberal with her affections so he took her from the north to start again. she lasted 6 months. good thing was he brought us up on his own and that meant we got a very good education for free (rowley would dispute that - the education....).

i genuinely believe you can have a laugh about racism / homophobia etc but it's all about each person you meet. i went out for a drink at lunch the other day with the first wooftie i've ever met. great bloke. likewise i recycle a few bernard manning jokes occasionally but the best audience i get from that are my indian or black mates. let's not get too sensitive on this forum ro we'll end up sounding like a bunch of sheila's discussing ironing......
