Response to covid varies hugely by state. I have friends here in Massachusetts who normally go to Florida each year to avoid the New England winters. They haven't gone this year because they're not comfortable leaving home (where masks are mandatory in public places) and heading to Florida where masks are not the norm.

That stand might be packed but I believe the stadium in total only had about 25, 000 people including 7,500 health carers. I don't get it either Mac.McLaren wrote:Can some of the Americans on here explain what is up with there being crowds at the golf and now I see the stadium is packed at the Super Bowl?

Yeah there was only 25,000 at the Super Bowl in like a 65,000 seater stadium, then 30,000 cardboard cut outs.
Fantastic win by Koepka - superb final round from him. Spieth, a much better week and looks to be regaining some of his game (ranking in the top 5 in approach play is very promising)...but do think Schauffele will be bitterly disappointed to have not won that. Really should have closed it out

Yeah. Where did that come from? Pleased for Spieth - hope it heralds something like a proper return to form. Interesting that neither he nor Schauffele could break par for the final round - two of the worst final round scores.Good Golly I'm Olly wrote:Yeah there was only 25,000 at the Super Bowl in like a 65,000 seater stadium, then 30,000 cardboard cut outs.

Navy, I know some of them are cardboard cutouts. I watched some of it. It was still packed. Do you think even a half full stadium could worsen the spread of covid?

25,000 at the superbowl. God knows when we will have anything similar here. Maybe the league Cup final in April or FA Cup in May?

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
It was not "packed". In answer to your Q re. covid risk, no, I'm not sure it would increase risk. Outside, distanced etc. Depends how people were managed going in/out etc etc and we don't know details. Not a hill I'll be dying on...McLaren wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:Hmm. Let me see. Frankie M had a bad day on the course yesterday at Pebble Beach
On his first hole, he topped his tee ball and it only went 70 yds
On his 2nd hole, his caddie stood in the wrong spot and Frankie was assessed a two shot penalty

I had a period last year for a couple of weeks where I would hit a couple of tops per round, even when playing well. So weird.

Am I the only one that doesn't get the Pebble hype? It has a few nice holes along the coast but overall the architecture and set up just don't do it for me.

Another win for Berger, the unfashionable yong American.
Also did Lashley gouge the green after his 3 putt for double?#
And the other guy playing with Spieth lost a ball up a tree on 18th. Pretty unlucky.

Berger's rise up the rankings the past year has been pretty incredible, surely a contender for the Ryder Cup squad in the Autumn?
One of the more effortless 65's I've seen yesterday, he was superb. Lashley played well, but a shocker on 16, and the reaction was a bit childish I thought

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
Berger was pretty dominant yesterday. Compare his reaction and resolve to an OOB tee shot the last hole in the 3rd round to Lashley's childish behavior on 16. Perhaps it's just optics, but I do think that the hang dog look Bubba Watson and Spieth have every time they miss a 30 footer can't help their cause.

Mac - PB is certainly dramatic and requires a deft touch to many small greens and parts of greens ... but with benign weather it's not a difficult course for the professionals. Spyglass is harder.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
I'm looking at the field for the Genesis Invitational and I am wondering why Ian Poulter is not in the field. The event offers more FedEx points than a regular PGA Tour event. The entry criteria includes a section for the players who earnt the most FedEx points between The Greenbrier and WMPO. Matt Fitzpatrick and Brandt Snedeker are in under that category and they are lower ranked than Poulter. Only reasons I can think of is those positions have changed since cut off date, or he just didn't fancy playing. Don't think he is qualified for the WGC either.
I will be watching this event as I have actually been to the course.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
The Genesis does not offer more FEDEX points than Pebble Beach, or Houston, or John Deere or any other regular PGATour event.
The winner will get 500 pts just like Berger got last week, and Koepka got for winning in Phoenix two weeks ago.
Genesis does however offer a few perks. Its an invitational, so the winner gets a 3 year exemption for the PGATour. There are also only 120 players in the field, so theoretically it is an easier cut to make (Top 65 and ties out of 120 players rather than 144 or 156 players). There are more top tier golfers playing LA so that somewhat mitigates the higher percentage of golfers making the cut.
Better field also means a better OWGR SoF Rating, so a high finish would give Poulter (or any other European) more World Ranking points for the Ryder Cup.

Ummmm...on the PGA Tour schedule it shows that the Genesis is worth 550 points and Pebble 500.

The Genesis was a great watch on Sunday night, Max Homa and Tony Finau both superb down the stretch and Homa getting it done on the second playoff hole. Shame for Sam Burns who’d led most of the event to finish one behind in the end

Agree. I watched a fair amount of that tournament, and I really enjoy the course, too. Poor Tony Finau can't seem to get the job done. I think he will eventually, but he'll need a pretty good cushion going into the final holes!

It was weird, because down the stretch in regulation he was superb, and holing those 5-10 foot putts he usually misses! But then come the playoff, he really should have got up and down for a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Do think it is going to happen for him soon...surely just some variance. He's clearly one of the better golfers around, and in contention every other week!

Glad to see Homa win again. Have been a fan of his since seeing him on the NLU youtube channel.
This is quite cool. Max plays the course where he played as a kid with the NLU guys.
Also played his high school course with them.

No Tiger at The Masters then, indeed it looks like we'll be lucky to see him playing again in any capacity after this:

In fact from some of the pictures I've seen of the car he's lucky to be alive.

He didn't look well on the broadcast on Sunday, in the midst of recovering from his latest surgery, so hopefully it is only a normal car crash...but wouldn't be shocked if there was a different reason
Good news is non life threatening injuries - but surgery on his legs suggests maybe broken?

Law enforcement sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter told The Times that Woods was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle before crossing the center divider. Woods’ SUV rolled multiple times before coming to a halt. Officials have not revealed the cause of the crash.

This latest Tiger story is just so mental, especially in the context of his other issues over the years. I just can't work out how we got from those halcyon days of the early 00's to here?
Don't know about anyone else but it is hard to sleep while thinking about Tiger.
