First topic message reminder :

Golden Boy have confirmed The Ghost is off the list, this should satisfy the people slating the possible match up, but only if a better opponent is found.

Alvarez would be good considering he's a huge LMW but can't see GBP letting it happen.

Question:

So if excluding Guerrero, Alvarez, Berto/Ortiz (as possibly too short after their Feb fight), Pac and any other Top Rank fighter i.e. Bradley, Cotto etc, who would you accept Mayweather fighting?

Very true. Perhaps they can ask Arum to cover those costs. Breach of contract etc. Very expensive given that MGM Grand stand to lose millions if the fight is switched. Arum is talking out of his rear end if he thinks they can just switch venue.

Perhaps Arum can book Celine Dion to play at MGM Grand on May 5th just in case.

Not a big deal for MGM, they don't make much out of fight night tickets - it could easily be replaced with a show as its only a 17,000 seater (and to be fair, blt exactly that extravagant inside). The real loser would be Vegas, as it would not arract enough clientele over the fight weekend.

However, the 40,000 capacity stadium should more than mitigate this impact. Without knowing the terms of the contract, I'm sure Floyd would be able to break this (with a penalty fine).

MGM would lose big time. Its not the numbers in total but the high rollers who are given free ringside seats and free hotel rooms so they spend on the tables.

It doesn't matter, as long as the fight is on the strip the clientele will be in the casinos (where the real money is made for the hotels). You have to take into account MGM owns several hotels, not just the hotel which houses the Garden. Basically, MGM as an entity won't lose out if the fight doesn't happen at the garden. Either way, this will be a real money spinner for Vegas which to be fair they desperately need given the current economic conditions and the relative moderate success of their City Center project.

The real problem is- it's highly unlikely a 40,000 temporary stadium will be erected on the strip in less than 4/5 months time! Economically, Bob Arum has a point, the fighters would lose out on a significant amount from gate receipts by fighting at the MGM. Whether Mr Wynn is willing to bankroll the project is a whole different story as well.

I'll take your word on that. But I have read elsewhere that hotels pay fortunes and compete with each other to hosts big fights to draw in the high rollers.

I agree with your asseretion regarding the 40k seats. Arum is looking for a way out to have the fight in Nov when Floyd will not have time to properly train.
