Quite like the idea of being part of an ARU, bit like a firefighter at an airport, you wouldn't really have to work very hard.

Im not saying havinbg guns would have saved them during the incident, just that he might have thought twice about instigating the ambush in the first place as it would appear that he didnt have a death wish as he gave himself up straight away. But who knows, its the police themselves who dont want to carry guns which in some ways suprises me I have to say.

Apparently there wasn't enough evidence to hold him on remand, and in such circumstances bail is applied.
You'd have thought though with such serious charges, they might have kept an eye on him and checked whether he had a hand grenade and pistol.

Norman Tebbitt should take his own advice;
"On your bike."

And, on the subject, yesterday's, of accents, has anyone ever heard a worse British accent than William Hague's?

Glasgow is the worst for me. It manages to sound deprived, uneducated, uncouth and aggressive all in one, not to mention high pitched, littered with expletives and generally incomprehensible.

Super, I agree about the glasgow/west coast accent. Actually - and i may loose my socialist worker subscription for this - any "working class" scottish accent sounds quite bad.

Yes the teuchter accent is pretty bad, thankfully I have never been to Aberdeen or the surrounding area.

To earn back my reputation as a fine champagne socialist I will say the posh Scottish Morningside accent really winds me up as well.

Not in the traditional South Fife (shroo, shree, neeboor, ya'hoor sir) nonsense.
Probably closer to an educated Edinburgh one given my St.Andrews background.
Many English people say they often don't think I sound Scottish at all.

So coming from fife, how many "kens" do you normally use in a sentance?

Mac, I only speak the Queens.

You should know via your many St.Andrews sojourns that the accent there is very slight and barely discernable (at least amongst the middle classes), so I'm not hiding my Scottish background, it's just not an accent as recognisable as a soap dodging weedgie or sheep shagging aberdonian.

I NEVER say "ken"

No Mac, There are a lot of disparate accents around there, i.e the village I grew up in was quite middle class and accentless, while the one a couple of miles around the road was quite industrial and tried too hard to put on a Scottish accent which is actually harder to do than speak properly.
I don't suppress it as such as if I have a telephone voice.

Not that obvious, my parents dont come from the same place and I did not grow up in the same place as either of them. So dont really share an accent.

PLus you said all the villages have different accents so it is worrying that both your parents come from the same small village. meaning you come from a small gene pool.

Not really Mac, My dad is from Edinburgh whilst my mother was local to where I grew up. Not surprising I have a neutral accent.

Be interesting to know what the Berwick accent is, given it's geographical position.

I wouldn't have thought so Mac, I don't find it endearing in a lady, so I doubt they would either, perhaps abroad where it appears unusual or "exotic", but not in Scotland.

Off to Norway with work in a month, so I'll let you know then.

Mac
I was with you about the Glasgow accent, that's till I started working with the Black Country folk in Bilston, near Dudley that's an accent that no one outside the Black Country can understand.

I had a Londoner who had worked there for 20 years, and he was asking me a Scotsman what they were saying?.

I saw that, really very embarrassing for scotland. I get the feeling 2014 will be more Delhi 2010 than London 2012.

Why does scotland always have to act so parochial on the world stage?

I thought the same, total lack of imagination and living up to every token cliche around.
I hope the commonwealth games are a total disaster, in fact they are bound to be if that's the best they can come up with for a mascot. Looks like morph on acid.

Diggers, I think it's the small man, insecure mentality and over the top parochialism that is a problem with Scotland hosting anything. They have to shout SCOTLAND!!! in your face at every opportunity. Part of the reason I don't consider myself Scottish.

I couldnt because its a work tool. The extra organisation and staffing I would need without a phone that does the below would make it pretty hard for me and other people with small businesses to just survive.

calenders, emails, gps, logmein, the phone itself diveting from my work number!, etc ,plus internet, apps, games, music, 606v2....
