Quiz Thread
First topic message reminder :
I am sure the exists somewhere already but the idea is that you post quiz questions for the rest of us to tackle.
To get us going I will go for a gentle question from yesterdays pointless.
The concept of pointless is that the question is given to 100 people before the show, and each correct answer is accompanied by the number of people in the 100 test group who gave that answer.
The more obscure answer score lower points and are therefore better.
The question was,
Name any UK golfer who has represented Europe in the Ryder cup since 1979? Can anyone get a pointless answer. I will restrict this to one name per poster.

Re: Quiz Thread
Kwini Chambers is correct. (although I would be happy to see it return as a major venue, that however is for another thread.)
And Roller, yes Portrush has held the Open once in 1951.
For referecnce now that we are on a new page the current question is;
(One event, so not for example AGNC for the masters or TOC for the Open)

Wasn't Tigers break a leg Open at Torrey Pines their first? As Tiger had done well on the course, that's why he played it whilst injured?

Re: Quiz Thread
more correct answers are;
Princes (The open 1932)
Kiawah (2012 PGA)
PGA National (1987 PGA)
Is there googling going on OR is it that we are just getting through the low hanging fruit?
Anyway, great success rate so far. Keep the answers coming.

In the usual sense. The question was, name courses that have held one major. Those answers were of courses who have held one major. Am I missing something?
Olympia fields is wrong (in the usual sense of something being wrong in a quiz)
It has held 4 majors
US open: 1928 and 2003
PGA: 1925 and 1961

Only put it in because answers that accurately fit your bill only seem to be sporadically acknowledged. So assumed there must be a wrong right.

The Buffalo Country Club. It's now called the Cleveland Golf Centre, and it is quite probably the easiest course I have ever played. If you want to flatter yourself, play there.
Nevertheless, there's a plaque saying it hosted the US Open once. I imagine the winning score would be -72.

Kwini had a look back and only Torrey was missed.
So complete list of correct answers so far are;
Chambers bay (US open 2015)
Portrush (Open 1951)
Torrey Pines (US open 2008)
Princes (The open 1932)
Kiawah (2012 PGA)
PGA National (1987 PGA)
Buffalo Country Club (US open 1912)

Incidentally I am just going through a list of small teams that did well in Europe in the late 70's and 80's. so if anyone has a more informed opinion you should step in.

Re: Quiz Thread
I think Butler National was kicked off the tour for its Male-Only membership policy, not because it didn't allow Minorities.
Wiki confirms it.
Cypress Point was kicked off the Pebble Beach Rotation in 1991 because of it did not have any Black Members.
Oak Tree in Oklahoma is another One Major course.

No. I have actually been asked this before and I was pretty sure the answer was a small team from the 70's or 80's. My next guess would have been Aberdeen.

Name the two players who, simultaneously were
World Cup Holders
European Champions
European Champions League Holders
Europa Cup Holders
When I say simultaneously I mean they were, at the time, the current champions for all four trophies.

That's a good shout LL. Obviously has to be Spanish players. I'm guessing the other player is Mata?

Torres and Mata are correct. There was a week when Chelsea - who had won the Champions League the year before - won the Europa Cup but the Champions League Final for the same year hadn't been played yet. So for a week, they held all four winners medals.

Re: Quiz Thread
Who am I?
I have two League Championship winning medals.
Had earned more caps for my country at the time of my final international than all but three men. Those ahead of me have all been knighted or got a CBE. I got a measly MBE.
Retired among the top three in all-time league appearances for one club. Never had a booking or card of any sort.
But I'm not in the Football League Hall Of Fame. Can't figure out why that is.

I imagine Denis the Menace has as many bookings or sendings off as caps!
Also, an original HOF inductee.
Not many knighted Scottish fitballers either.

The only thing I know about Kwini and football is Pompey.
So a player from Portsmouth- and it will be some time ago when they won a championship or two. But apart from that no idea.

Well done MPB, I think he played his 48 England games consecutively, pretty much so anyway.
Can never understand why guys like Summerbee, to name an egregious example, is in the HOF but players of the pre-TV generation are pretty much ignored, especially if they come from "small" clubs.
More important, MPB, you need to return to Grumpy's fantasy game . . . . . . .

Agreed Kwini. Was it Sun Jihai (Man City defender) who recently was inducted to the HOF??! Ridiculous.
I've been super busy at work of late and haven't been on here very much at all. Hopefully will be back in the fantasy game now, not that I expect my points haul to improve from the missing weeks!

Hadn't seen the Sun Jihai report, but yes, that would be absurd. Not sure that having Matt Le Tiss ahead of Mick Channon and Terry Paine is quite right as a sop to Soton either.

Re: Quiz Thread
ray,
They used to have one in London many decades ago, not very good!
Then revived it in Preston, then moved it to Manchester, presumably for purely commercial reasons. All a bit pointless if it's just a popularity contest.
The Baseball Hall of Fame in New York State is fabulous, been a few times as they keep it very current whilst continually reinvigorating exhibits of generations before.
And, at a club level, the exhibits at the home stadium of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team are superb. Legends respected for what they achieved on the ice, not the souvenir shops.

Re: Quiz Thread
ok so have just looked up the hall of fame and what a cringeworthy honour it is. Inductees have to have played / managed in England for at least 5 years. Some highlights:
Sun Jihai - was inducted just before the President of China visited the UK, obviously this was just a coincidence.
Michel Platini - never played in England but for some reason the squeaky clean UEFA president was inducted shortly before England's bid for the 2018 world cup.
Robbie Earle - hardly a premier league legend, was probably rewarded after he was sacked as a tv pundit when his family and friends world cup tickets turned up on the black market and were sold to a beer marketing company.
