2019 Ashes Series Tipping Competition

71st Ashes Tipping Competition Rules:

1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both England and Australia who you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets.
You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Warner, Smith, Starc, Cummins
Roy, Root, Broad, Woakes

2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Stokes, Bancroft

3.
Select the total number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined by each wicket keeper for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Australia 9, England 9. Total dismissals 18

4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g. Australia

b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g. Bat

5.
a) Predict the 1st Ashes Test result.
e.g. England

b) Predict the overall Ashes Series result.
e.g. England 3 Australia 2

Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of each Test. No PM reminders shall be sent.


Scoring:

1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.

Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;

Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.

Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.

5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points

Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 30 bonus points for the catch = 50 points.

2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsman earns you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.

3.
Wicket keepers: I’ll rank your predictions from the actual scores after each Test. Whoever guesses closest to the actual result receives 100 points, then descending down 5 points, so 95 points for the next closest guess, 90 points for the next, etc. If you chose the same scores as another member… then you'll both receive the same points. Next closest then receives 85, 80, 75, 70... depending on how many of us there are.

4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.

5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 75 points. Your selection for each Test must correlate with your overall margin in part b) below.
b) If you guess all 5 Ashes Test outcomes correctly then there is a further 125 point bonus = 375 + 125 = 500 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 75 points

If a selected player gets injured or is dropped from the Test side, then you’ll have the opportunity to select a replacement player – before the next Test commences. This player doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

We can essentially add 75 points to Guildford, Flipper, SK, etc when the inevitable England victory occurs. Just a question of who will score the runs, take the wickets and catches today... I doubt we will get to Day 5.

Guildford - you picked the best days to attend the match. I'm sure you had a great time.  The Oval looks stunning...
It would have been nice to see Joe Denly get his maiden Test century to cap off his special week after the birth of his baby girl. Nice bloke and a fairly decent cricketer too. Wadey101 would have got a handy 50 point bonus as well.

Is there a sniff I could get off the bottom? Predicted an england win and a 2-2 series (pre series)...!

Definitely Olly. Only 95 points off... if Curran and Woakes come to town I'd say you're in with a good shot.

I can't believe KP_f and Compelling actually tied on 5723! Checked it a few times just to make sure.

Actually thought I was gone when KP_f had a huge lead at one stage going into this last match.

This last Test - it was more pure batsmen scoring runs and bowlers taking the wickets... and not all-rounders/bowlers scoring a chunk of runs although Joe Root was the extra bonus there for those who had him... taking a few wickets as well as scoring runs.

The decision to drop Warner early paid off but I did mess it up dropping Cummins then reinstating him... then he didn't do as much for the 5th Test. I was lucky to scrape over the line; especially considering Compelling finished with a huge surge at the end.

I was also very lucky picking 4/4 results and getting the toss right a few times. Slow to respond to wicket keeping but I guess we can all agree 5-5 (or thereabouts) was about right for the entirety of these matches, eh Guildford?  

A weird co-incidence was that on the final day of the series both James and Olly scored 277 points which was bang on the average for the day.
So that's not a typo!  

Thanks everyone for participating. I hope you all enjoyed the challenge. It's just like the real match in many ways... many ups and downs day by day. The scales shifting dramatically at times.  But all good fun. Let me know if there is anything worth improving for the next iteration.

How could I forget such a high quality series you never know you might be triumphant in Japan.

It was good to see the series played in the right way for the most part aside from Wade being an irritating so and so on Saturday and Archer coming over all pantomime yesterday.

Wonder ful work Pal. The series became more interesting with lots of hard work from your side too. I wasn't lucky with the win prediction, and my team did above average.

I'm participating in the Rugby World Cup one now. Hugehandoff has about 35 people signed up.
I appreciate the amount of work he has to do over the 6 weeks or whatever. So much adding up.

Had a quick glance at India-SA today... and things are just warming up here in Oz. Finch hit 14 sixes in the ODI comp.
It's called the Marsh Cup - would you believe! However it's not named after the players/family but some global professional services firm based in NY.
