2019 Ashes Series Tipping Competition

First topic message reminder :

71st Ashes Tipping Competition Rules:

1.
Pick 2 (two) batsmen and 2 (two) bowlers from both England and Australia who you think will score the most runs and take the most wickets.
You get both batting and bowling points per innings so a bowler who scores runs has both batting and bowling scores added together.
e.g.
Warner, Smith, Starc, Cummins
Roy, Root, Broad, Woakes

2.
Pick 1 (one) fielder from each team; excluding wicket keepers for most catches in the Series.
It can be a bowler (for c&b) if you want.
e.g.
Stokes, Bancroft

3.
Select the total number of catches, stumpings and run outs combined by each wicket keeper for each Test.
If a wicket keeper is injured then the replacement keeper's figures shall be used.
e.g.
Australia 9, England 9. Total dismissals 18

4.
Predict the Toss:
a) Who wins the toss?
e.g. Australia

b) Winning captain's decision - bat or field?
e.g. Bat

5.
a) Predict the 1st Ashes Test result.
e.g. England

b) Predict the overall Ashes Series result.
e.g. England 3 Australia 2

Selections must be posted a minimum one (1) hour before the commencement of each Test. No PM reminders shall be sent.


Scoring:

1.
1 point for every run scored by your nominated batsmen. Add together for each Test.
Bonus 20 points for 100 runs.
extra 25 points for 150 runs.
extra 40 points for 200 runs.
extra 50 points for 250 runs.
extra 60 bonus points for 300+ runs.

Note: the batting & bowling score bonuses accumulate so;

Batting:
100 runs = 120 points. A player scores 127 + 20 = 147 points.
150 runs = 195 points. A player scores 176 + 20 + 25 = 221 points.
200 runs = 285 points. A player scores 243 + 20 + 25 + 40 = 328 points.
250 runs = 385 points. A player scores 282 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 = 417 points
300+ runs = 445 points. A player scores 309 + 20 + 25 + 40 + 50 + 60 = 504 points.

Bowling:
20 points per wicket with a bonus 50 points for a 5-fer.
An extra 35 points for 6-fer, 40 for 7-fer, 45 for 8-fer, 50 for 9-fer.
An extra 100 bonus points for a 10-fer.

5 wickets = 100 + 50 = 150 points
6 wickets = 120 + 50 + 35 = 205 points.
7 wickets = 140 + 50 + 35 + 40 = 265 points
8 wickets = 160 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 = 330 points
9 wickets = 180 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 = 400 points
10 wickets = 200 + 50 + 35 + 40 + 45 + 50 + 100 = 520 points

Caught and bowled = 20 points for the wicket + 30 bonus points for the catch = 50 points.

2.
Fielder catches: Your nominated fieldsman earns you 25 points per catch and 25 points for a run out.

3.
Wicket keepers: I’ll rank your predictions from the actual scores after each Test. Whoever guesses closest to the actual result receives 100 points, then descending down 5 points, so 95 points for the next closest guess, 90 points for the next, etc. If you chose the same scores as another member… then you'll both receive the same points. Next closest then receives 85, 80, 75, 70... depending on how many of us there are.

4.
a) Correctly predict who wins the toss = 15 points
b) Correctly predict what the winning Captain decides to do = 15 points - only for those with part a) above correct; no points if your a) was incorrect.

5.
a) Correctly predict the winning team for each Test = 75 points. Your selection for each Test must correlate with your overall margin in part b) below.
b) If you guess all 5 Ashes Test outcomes correctly then there is a further 125 point bonus = 375 + 125 = 500 points.
Note: Correctly predict a "Draw" = 75 points

If a selected player gets injured or is dropped from the Test side, then you’ll have the opportunity to select a replacement player – before the next Test commences. This player doesn’t have to be the actual substitute player – it can be somebody already in the team. However, you don’t receive any of their previous points – you must start accumulating points from scratch with them.

You can predict England 4 times in that England 3-1 scenario - Eng (lost) Eng (won) Draw, Eng (won), Eng (won) ... an overall England 3-1 result.
However someone who correctly picked Aus/Eng/Draw/Eng/Eng would have picked up 75 points for each Test (375 points + bonus) compared to your 300 points only... for the 4 correct picks.

Does that make sense or is there something massive I've overlooked?  

Yeah I think it does. So if England win the first three I have to go Aus and draw for the last two ; but if this is drawn and Aus win at Lord's as usual (even though I've picked England for each ?) I can then keep picking the home team for the last three...in other words we can pick anything game by game , as long as it wouldn't immediately invalidate our overall prediction ? Cool.

I haven't heard any news about Anderson today. Seems as it is being kept under wraps by England which is fair enough - why let on to your opponents what is happening. That said, he was clearly uncomfortable when running in his little knock yesterday - my own non-medical view is that I would be surprised to see him again in this test or the next. Beyond that, no idea at this stage.

I somehow believe that you have Lyon... and my hours at the top are numbered. I feel quite relieved when I wake up and take another look at it.

It could all change in a matter of hours... depending on how it unfolds today. So maybe these 'nightmares' are actually accurate premonitions?

Joey - I suspect I've headed towards the front too soon and will burn out. At my age, I should be holding back and waiting for you young guns to all fall at a water jump!

knew id slip after Englands second innings because i didnt have lyon.

rubbish wicket keeper predictions aswell. with the ball doing a fair bit it was all lbw and not caught behind

You can go with whoever you like, compelling. Replace all 4 batsmen and bowlers if you like. The only thing that remains fixed is the overall prediction.

Sorry compelling, I can't do that. Everyone was locked in well before the scheduled toss. We were all in the same boat. It was frustrating I know.
I also don't want to set a precedent whereby everyone wants to tweak their selections when weather delays occur just prior to commencement.
I hope you understand.
