PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
First topic message reminder :
PGATour Running Commentary- Aug 2020
1. Last week: Justin Thomas overcame a 4 shot deficit to win the WGC-FEDEX St Jude by three shots over a four players of Tom Lewis, Daniel Berger, Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka Richie Werenski won the Barracuda event, by one point over Troy Merritt.
2. After he won the Memorial, Jon Rahm took the #1 OWGR ranking from Rory, and now after winning the FEDEX, Justin Thomas took the #1 spot.
3. This week is the PGA Championship, with most of the OWGR Top 100 players in the field. The tournament venue is at Harding Park, which has hosted two WGC tournaments in the last 20 years. Here are some finishes by players in this years field: Woods (1), Garcia (3), Stenson (3), GMac (6), Furyk (15)Poulter (18), Mickelson (29), Scott (29), ZJohnson (43), The Match play was played at Harding Park in 2015, won by Rory, beating Woodland in finals. Players advancing to the Round of 16, include Willett, Furyk, Casey, Oosty, Fleetwood, Fowler, Hideki, and Leishman.
4. Only two more tournaments to qualify for the FEDEX playoffs, some notable players that are currently inside the Top 125, but probably have not clinched a spot in the Northern Trust (Tom Lewis (#117), Russell Knox (#120, Paul Casey (#121), Charl Schwartzel (#123). Some players just barely outside the Top 125 include Nick Watney, Zach Johnson, Matt Wallace, Shane Lowry, RCB, Sergio, and Justin Rose. Some players that need a big week to get inside the Top 125 include Willett, Dufner, Power, Walker, Stenson

CJ Cup gave five of its sponsors exemptions to Euro Players
Fleetwood, Garcia, Lowry, Poulter and Rose.
Keegan and Spieth were the only Americans to get a sponsor exemption.
edit: Add Koepka and Fowler to the Bradley and Spieth to get a sponsor invites.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
Didn't see that coming from martin laird. Got to be a good feeling to win an event with The wolf and the big golfer in the hunt.
Not many UK golfers with 4 or more PGAT wins. Trivia time, who are they and how many PGAT wins do they have?
Laird could probably have played the ET or been an anonymous doubling dipper but instead he chose to grind it out solely on the PGAT, and i have huge respect for that.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
That was a great win and some fine drama by Laird yesterday.
I thought it might be his day when he eagled with the buried lie bunker shot on 13 (I think that was the hole).
He was really beginning to tighten up coming in (tee shot on 17, but an incredible up and down) and then the bogey (in regulation) on 18. But what a playoff. I thought his putt on 18 was going down, but so glad to see he did make the birdie on the second playoff hole.

Mac, I am assuming you mean apart from WGC's and Majors.
I which case I suggest McIlrory - 12, Rose - 6, Lyle and Donald - 4.
I think there may be more a long time ago......

Didn't see the golf, apart from that clip. Definitely luck involved, but still a heck of a shot.Shotrock wrote:That was a great win and some fine drama by Laird yesterday.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
I have probably missed a few but here is a list of recent UK&I players who have played a fair bit on the PGAT. The first number is wins exclusive to the PGAT and the number in brackets is all wins counted as official PGAT wins.
Rory 11(18)
Rose 7(10)
Donald 4(5)
Laird 4(4)
Harrington 3(6)
Casey 3(3)
Westwood 2(2)
Poulter 1 (3)
Hatton 1(1)
knox 1(2)
Clarke 0(3)
Fleetwood 0
Fitzpatrick 0
Monty 0
in this context Laird has had a sneaky very good career.

Impressive stuff by Laird this past week. And ahead of Casey and Westwood on this list surprised me.
Also, I can't imagine that Fleetwood won't break through very soon.

But shane hasn't won a regular PGAT event so he is not adding much to the list anyway. He has a WGC and a major.

Who cares? I doubt there's any Mormons in the US that have more than one wife, it's just a stereotype I was playing on, although curiously the only state in America that allows polygamy is........Utah. I wonder why?

Japan PGA Tour has been slow to restart since the Covid shutdown. Only one non co-sanctioned event played until this week,
Their "flagship" event is being played this week, and their highest ranked full time player has the first round lead. Shugo Imahiro shot a first round 68 for a one lead over 3 players.

Poulter being steady lately too, might not be someone who'll win that often but raking in the cash and ranking points.

I have never played Shadow Creek, but could you imagine the amount of water it takes to keep that place as lush as it is? Lots of desert courses only water the fairways and greens, but not Shadow Creek.

My thoughts as well. It is very lush and a stark contrast to TPC Summerlin last week which is about 20 miles away from Shadow Creek.
There has got to be a lot of payola involved.
Three of the Top 5 on the Japan Open leaderboard after 36 holes are amateurs.

Re: PGATour Running Commentary - Aug 2020
The more I watched the tournament the more I liked this 100% artificial course. It looked to be in amazing condition as well and the rough seemed far more penal than Winged Food. I expect the PGA will be back there.
I do not gamble even a little bit, but I do enjoy a trip to Vegas now and then (go about 2x - 3x a year for business since it's the most natural place in the US to hold conferences of just about any size). Lots of hotel rooms, dining option and entertainment. Just stay close to the strip.

Its golf related.
Unlike puerile commentary on a player's personal life or fatuous and inane observations on a player's appearance.

I will be honest (and I should probably just google it) I don't know the specifics of this years fall/winter schedule but since these events got incorporated into the fedex race the Tiger event has seemed a little pointless. Back in the day it was something fun to watch when the PGAT wasn't firing on all cylinders and playing golf in the UK was pretty grim. Even in a covid year the schedule has you saturated in how much golf there is to watch.

I enjoy watching golf, no matter the time of year. The thing I didn't like about the WC was the OWGR recognition. It should have never received points. Everyone got points, even the player(s) that finished DFL.
FWIW, there is an official PGATour event that week, at Mayakoba. Which might be the first time there has been an official PGATour event in December. At least it is the first one in a very long time.
The US Women's Open is the following week, in Houston TX.
