The 2023 Cricket World Cup
First topic message reminder :
The ICC apparently changed the Champions Trophy qualification rules in March 2021.
It's just they never told anyone about it, never made a media release, and hence most teams were unaware of the alteration until yesterday.
I'll revise my question from yesterday to: Who on earth makes a change to the qualification format of a supposedly major competition and doesn't bother to tell anyone?

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup
240ao. About 40/50 runs light, I'd say.
India were suffocated by the pressure, that much was evident. Way too passive, far too many dot balls eaten up, not enough boundaries scored (13 fours and three sixes). Australia were not put under pressure for the majority of the innings.
Australia were excellent. Their aggressive and accurate ground fielding set the tone and every bowler did their job, headlined by Starc and Cummins.
Ordinarily you'd say Australia are comfortable favourites, but it's a World Cup final. They don't come around too often (actually, they come around every year, but I digress). India need at least a few wickets in the opening ten. Australia just need one centurion to win it.
Lot of talk about dew, but we haven't seen that much dew at this tournament.

Wow, catchable edge off the very first ball....they all left it to each other.

This is the ground where chasing has been better though. The IPL stats bear that out here as well I believe.
Australia were really getting purchase with their cutters. India have one of the best cutter bowlers I've seen in Bumrah. He's in that Mustafizur bracket of nearly bowling off breaks at 85mph sometimes. Whilst Siraj is also very good at it.
If dew comes down, hampers that as well as Kuldeep and Jadeja then Australia should chase this. If the dew doesn't really fall then I could see this being scrappy and close.
15 from the first over... I think it's the Aussies to lose

Shami will now finish as leading wicket taker in this CWC having missed the first half of the tournament. Insane stuff. Poor shot from Warner though.

AUS asking for 80 to 90 runs in fist 10
If they get it for not more than 2 down....it will be wasy for them
If ind get them.4 down , then it will be a tight scrap
So much on first 10

Aus's frenetic approach not coming out vs Ind as much as they did against other sides
Quality of seam attack much better
Aus I think steadying themselves now to play test styled

India have got those three wickets in seven overs. Now it's a game.
Head + Labuschagne. Vital partnership. Break it early and India are on course.

Shaping up to be a classic. Some of Australia 's weaknesses showing up already, M Marsh at 3 in a big final, no thanks. Now we'll have to see how stodgy Labuschagne is and whether that builds more pressure, if he even lasts that long.

Should have told Marsh he was playing England. Would have blasted a century by now.

Generously helped by England bowling 80mph bumpers to a bloke that smokes the short ball but routinely misses if you just bowl full and straight...

5 overs each up top for India's most threatening two bowlers. Rohit has done the right thing by just attacking the PP as hard as possible for early wickets. Now the spinners and Siraj need to back them up.
Smudge getting out before Kuldeep and Jadeja come on feels very significant given how well he manipulates spin.

Once you see of first 15 overs of seam....pitch eases and with even some dew doesn't spin.
Ball is coming much better now on the bat then in first half
And there definitely won't be any reverse

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup
Perfect partnership as the task for batting has got a little easier past the 10 over mark. Rotating the strike well, occasional boundary, it's all they need.
I'd be bringing back Bumrah and Shami for a couple of overs. It's currently drifting away from India.

India needs close in fielders to catch the edges when the bowler beats the batter
You won't win by saving runs
As going gets tough, situation desperate, match slipping every captain starts looking Medicore like Bavuma and Babar

Might just have to bowl out Shami and Bumrah at this point. If India don't strike soon it'll be too late

It looks like it's starting to skid onto the bat a bit to me. That down the ground from Head, then that cover drive from Marnus. It seems to be coming on a bit better.
Jadeja is bowling beautifully at the other end though.

Under 100 now. It's cruise control for Australia.
Hasn't been a ton scored in a World Cup final since 2011. Head currently on 69.

No grip nor reverse that aussie found in the morning.
After 15 overs seam lessened considerably
Now it's good for batting and only s miracle combined with suicide from Aus batters can win this for India

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup
Safe to say the gamble on Head's fitness paid off. He missed the first bit of the World Cup through injury, but Australia took him along anyway. Head has put in a century v NZ, top scored for Aus in the SF, and is now the top-scorer in the final. Remarkable effort.
Umpire's call goes against India. Not their day. Ten perfect games, then fluffed it when it truly mattered. Story of the last decade for them.

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup
Well done, Travis Head. A player I've liked for a long time, and is now fulfilling his potential. Likes the big occasion - don't forget his 163 MOTM display in the World Test Championship final earlier in the year, which rescued Australia from early strife and set up a victory, just like today.
India once again have shown themselves to be giants when it comes to group phase cricket - 22 wins from their last 23 completed games in that department, covering three World Cups - but midgets when it comes to KO cricket.

Re: The 2023 Cricket World Cup
If Australia win this, which seems like a certainty, Australia would have beaten every other team in this tournament exactly once - avenging their first two losses when they were Headless in the semi-final (SA) and final (India).
