Morning chaps. Judging by the lack of bodies on here today - there must have been a minor celebrity apocalypse at the weekend.
Have also noticed that Truss hasn't been around much lately. Has anyone checked if Christopher Biggins is alive and well?

Morning super...
Not checked the obits yet, but surely Biggins would be big news.
Though one of the big stories in the Bradford local rag over the weekend was about a woman who got trapped under a wardrobe for an hour and half...
So maybe the Biggins thing has not filtered through yet

Truss has probably gone to Wales to spend a week in his father in law's caravan.

Do you have to eat in the toilets at your place, Rick. Surely not even in Bradford?

He doesn't HAVE to.....he just likes it.
As for Biggins, I think he's still alive as one of my local supermarkets didn't have any batteries in stock

At my brothers place the cleaner eats his sandwiches in the bogs. Worked there for years and years and is a seasoned pro - the kind of bloke who has seen everything. Until that is the day when he walked in to trap one and exclaimed 'Good god!'. They never did get to the bottom of what initiated such a reaction, but it must have been nasty to ruffle this old fella.

I've been busy applying for permission to appeal against my conviction for indecent assaults - five years and nine months is a seriously long time when you think about it. My lawyers told me to count my blessings that the sentence wasn't reviewed for leniency but I told them to get f*cked, said I wasn't paying them to sit around on their arses playing with their balls.

Morning sean, see there is a TRUSS themed retirement thread from ONETWO on the boxing boards.

Was very disappointed with Mildred in the over 80's mixed doubles match yesterday evening. 2 artificial hips is no excuse for not running around a bit more, imho.

Pain in the arse those things, he will return (they always do), then people will take the pee over the "retirement" he will lose his rag, arguments and insults will ensue and us mods will have shed loads of clearing up and deleting comments to deal with.

To be fair Jeff, I think that ONETWO loses his rag that more reasons will merely expedite him leaving the boards the next time rather than being booted (every cloud and all that...)

I was watching a bird play tennis at our club yesterday. She was wonderful. I then started chatting to our old boy who knows her. He chucked a tennis ball and she ran over and caught it shouting owzat. Fell in love there and then.

How was the weekend Rowls? I am currently on a break and I have to say it is not bad. I can spend all my spare time at the cricket club then come home and watch a war film and water the tomatoes. Watched Patton last night, and I'm gonna go for Beneath Hill 60 tonight unless someone tells it is shiiite. I think there is a void when it comes to Saving Private Ryan style war films based on WW1.

It was alright mate, went out Saturday night in Barnsley, which is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life. Have you watched the Longest Day Sean? Cracking war film that. Patton is on netflix, must watch it at some point, love George C Scott.

Re: The Culture Cup Round 6 - new but not really improved
Funny that, saw that 100 year anniversary documentary on the history channel last night. During the Mexican War in 1916, Patton mounted a machine gun on a car and mowed down three of Pancho Villa's men on horses. Must have been a hell of a surprise for them.
Nearly 30 years later my old man surrendered to elements of the US 3rd Army, led by George Patton.
Not to him personally - but to some brigade from Hawaii, believe it or not, as they swam across some river which had large chunks of ice which killed many. The SS allowed the regular Army to cross the river first whilst they provided the cover fire at the Russians who were also closing in on them. Not long after, all the SS were "ploughed into the ground" by Russian artillery.
I actually went to the Flak Kaserne in Zirndorf (SW of Nurnberg near Furth) with him in 2005. It was exactly 60 years after he was a P.O.W. there. It must have brought back some heavy memories for him but he was pretty cool that day.
He told me he expected to see the guard at the gate tower pop his head out and say "where are you off to now, A?"
He used to run errands for the Colonel there and apparently had use of his car to buy provisions in the town for the PX. There was always banter with the black guard in the guardhouse just outside the tower which I think has now been demolished because I can't see it on Google anymore. The Yanks renamed it Pinder Barracks and they only left there for good in about 2009 according to their website.

I'm 1/4 Hungarian,
1/4 Transylvanian
The old German speaking Siebenburgen area which is now part of Romania but was swallowed up in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Hence Dad's call up in late 1943 as a "Volksdeutsch"... the original armies that had invaded France, Poland, Russia in '41 had been all but wiped out, so Hitler issued the order for "all 17,18 and 19 year olds to report for duty - or else!" It was the last throw of the dice for him and the army in Russia already knew it was "all over".
On Mum's side - she is descended from English folk. I did the Ancestory.cum thing - we had our own family trees - but on that site I got as far back as the year 970... where there were all these long unpronounceable names either from Scandinavia, France, Belgium,... all over the place.
And this was hundreds of years before they arrived in England (around Devon). Just goes to prove that we are all probably from everywhere.
There is a Scottish link there too - and also some Irish. Then my great GF emigrated to NZ - so the other 2 quarters are English and Irish via Kiwi land. They all fought for Empire everywhere. Some never survived, others lived for a couple of decades after (one grand uncle had severe gas poisoning and never was the same again). In WW2, many of Mum's relatives were in the Pacific theatre of war.
Quite bizarre really. I had relatives in both wars on both sides... but luckily they never came near each other.
I'm a mad historian. Absolutely absorbed in dates and timelines, people and events.
I can't get enough about reading and watching documentaries from about early Middle Ages onwards until this current day. I'm not religious but I'm fascinated by trying to understand the power and the influence that it had on all those people throughout history.
We are so lucky those days are gone but now we have another type of dilemma... did the Crusades end (or have they ever ended and were relatively dormant for most of the 20th C) and now the wheel has turned back to a religious thing but this time we have taught them everything about conflicts (we are such as generous and proud lot) and then given them all the weaponry to carry it out?
Similarly - did the First World War cause all this madness we are seeing today? Whoever drew up the maps 100 years ago may have made a mistake. Obviously there are a lot of angry people in certain parts of the world. Drawing a long bow maybe but things were never really fully resolved.
The plane crash in Ukraine complicates things because I think we need Russia on the western side as well - should be a north-south rather than an east-west-south thing if you know what I mean. They are closer to us than the real enemy and this unfortunate incident is a badly timed "distraction" and will make us spend more energy in the wrong place. (i.e. Keep it on one front if possible! Not two. We don't need that. Again.)

Re: The Culture Cup Round 6 - new but not really improved
Just remembered this really awkward incident.
Back in 2005 when I visited Budapest with Dad to see his sister and the relatives.
There were three generations of us sitting down about to have lunch with some "euro" channel on in the background and all of a sudden this super-extreme hard core porn just appears. I'm pretty sure there was some sport on a moment or two before then.
It went on for a few minutes and nobody seemed to blink an eye.
As the noise got louder... I think I then mentioned it to my female cousin (quite a cool, modern sort!) and she just seemed to gloss over it as if this type of viewing just happens and is nothing special... part of life, etc.
If I remember correctly she said something like this in a deadpan voice: "oh... you know... it is just ze porn or somezing.... It iz no big deal really..."

What about me you C**t?
Morning all. Does anyone have a remedy to sooth a blistered bumh0le? Missus made a beef massaman curry on saturday night and brought the left overs over on sunday. It could have been deliberately laced hydrochloric acid to inflict further pain on me but was a tad spicy all the same. 3rd day now though. I currently have a slightly damp cotton wool ball up there for temporary relief.
